How good are LG,Sony and Samsung Plasma's ?

I can't say. Pioneer used to be the best, with Hitachi and Panasonic fighting for second place. Later Hitachi stopped and used Pany panels and now they stopped completely. Pioneer also stopped and used Pany panels and now they're shutting down for good in 2010.

Nope - LCD.

I first went in convinced I wanted the Sony Bravia 46V550 - until he showed me the diffence between 50hz and 100hz. I then changed to the 46W550 which offered 100hz (but identical in every other way) ... until I realised it was R7,000.00 for this feature!

Then he pointed out this set and I compared them to both Sonys and the LED 700o series. To my eyes the 7000 series and the W series were identical - both being better than the V due to 100hz.

Then he mentioned the price, showed me the network capabilities (Internet TV, USB2.0, ethernet, content library etc) and I was sold.

My only gripe is the HDMI switching (someone mentioned this earlier - and it effects me). I connected all my components to amp (HDMI) and a single HDMI to the TV - but the TV picked everything up as DVI (no sound). There's an issue with the handshake.

But - I'm not sure if it's the amplifier or the TV. I'm upgrading the firmware on the amp next week and let you know if it's fixed. Otherwise a Marantz SR5002 will be on the classified soon ....

The Sony V-Series it totally outdated. I bought the very 1st model 4 years back ( costed then R25k  ) and not much has changed besides the frame and a few things here and there.

bottom line is 100hz is a must if you're buying a TV , otherwise its none the better than a CRT (imo).

But whats the point of buying Panasonic if they also shut down in S.A ? I mean if you need backup , spares/parts will cost possibly tripple due to none availability, and you could possibly wait very long if parts are scarce.

I think the retailer supports them. I know AudioVision has guys who fix Hitachi, they still sell Hitachi and Hitachi isn't in SA either.

The other thing is, that these expensive things don't break down so much. Touchwood :) but this 3-4 yr old plasma I own works like a bomb and shows no signs of any impeding doom.

Also own a Panasonic AG-DVX100E camera. Imported. Not worried that there are no agents in SA. After 4 years of heavy use (on 3 continents), it has had no issues. Now also have a Sony full HD CineAlta branded camera. I doubt this Japanese made piece of kit will fail either.

Plasma's=Good (better than LCD), BUT they are big heat generators!

I have a Hitachi 42" plasma for 5 years & 99% happy except for the amount of heat they generate. In South Africa this can be a big influence and no salesman will make you aware of it. Pls take note of this point for what's it worth when making a final decision

I'm from Rustenburg and when its on the whole day you do start feeling heat in the room which result in: => running a aircon to bring down the temp => resulting $$$$ jump in the electrical bill!

I'm also looking at the 46" LED Series 8 for replacement and moving the Hitachi to the bedroom for my boy's Cbeebies in the morning

Bought a 50 inch Full HD Samsung Plasma last week - the B650 and am really happy with it. It is actually better than I expected and worth the 23.5 K I paid for it.

Also, I saw LCD, LED and Plasma (all Samsungs) in the store side by side from the same sources and definitely preferred the Plasma. Even a colleague who was interested in LCD / LED changed his mind to Plasma after that.

Also, no problem with heat generation as poster above points out. The B series (2009) is greatly improved over the A series (2008).

Oh My? Wonder what happened to "Do not preach to the preacher" or "do not sing to the choir" ? Hope you get sorted soon. Else a PS3 slim can maybe solve all your problems :D

Just Joking.

There are so many small technical tiTbits to be looked at when doing a MAJOR LCD purchase that its so easy to miss a single point that makes the setup trivial. I feel for you. Therefore I try to purchase exclusively at Makro to return the item if it does not do what I NEED or expected.

I see, thanks for the info. If you serious about the Series 8, i can get it for R33k and if that suits you, hit me a PM.

Yeah, i would have also bought possibly a 55" full HD Plasma, but i needed to replace my old 40V in the bedroom. 46" is just right i think. BUT the Series 8 really does enhance the quality of picture. I dont even mind keeping my SD PVR now until MC starts broadcasting many Channels in HD.

I (highly) doubt it can be that easy

Talking about buying from Makro I presume? I bought a 32" LCD TV from them with PC VGA input and the display due to resolution from PC was so bad I returned it. They had one look and decided I was right and refunded my cash as there was nothing else in the price tag that could replace it. Many time with other appliances I had the same experience.

1)What brand LCD did you buy ?
2) They refunded you because of a technical fault
3) They would have not refunded you if they felt there was nothing wrong.
4) They would not refund a R20k + TV that theres absolutely nothing wrong with as with the case of Dolby who doesnt know exactly where his fault lies, and if i understood correctly, Dolby says it could be his amp.

hehe ... well, at this point I'm not sure whether the TV or amplifier is at fault. The components all work directly - which leads me to believe the amplifier is at fault :/ The last firmware was released 3 months back - and I bought the amplifier about a year back ... so hopefully a firmware upgrade will help.

They actually did say I could return the unit with no questions within 7 days - but tbh, I really love the TV so much that'll overlook that issue and rather upgrade my amp in a few months if that is the issue.

PS3 slim would still have the same switching issue, I'm sue ;) In fact, this error simply makes the Marantz like the standard Sonys (video's but no sound) ;)

Otherwise I'm very happy! Will let you know about next weeks firmware and if it works!

I think they would. And can confirm that this is the case, from personal experience. I once returned a Samsung CRT, telling them "It's a piece of ****" as my reason for returning it, (although, I did have documentry proof from a Samsung repair agent that there was in fact "geometric distortion which was beyond repair").

On topic: I'll give the technology a few more years to mature before I buy another flat panel TV.

I had to dust off a 14" CRT monitor a few days ago (the LCD it replaced was "put back into service"), and the contrast, refresh rate and colour reproduction is spectacular. OK, so it's barely readable at 800 x 600, but compared to the LCD it replaced, video playback is nothing short of amazing.

So maybe that's because the LCD was a PC monitor, but even my, admittedly cheap ass, S series Sony TV can't compare to a 15 year old CRT PC monitor. I don't buy TVs very often, so I expect them to last at least 2 decades, and I think I'll be junking my Sony long before that. That's what I mean by not mature. I have a lot of hope for OLED, but that's still a few years off, till then I'll survive with my CRT TVs and the one Sony LCD.

Ahhh you live in that old world......

You may as well stick with your CRT then.... LCDs won't last 20years, neither will Plasmas, or OLED's....

Easy solution ... Buy a Pioneer PDP-508XG before it's too late ... you CAN still get them ...

The VIERA's are very good, but still second to the Pioneer KURO's.

The 508 is not FullHD, but it does also take a 1080p signal. I bought a Samsung FullHD 50" plasma, thinking it would be a nice set, was R30K. Could not live with its image processing, so I convinced the shop to source me the KURO. Had to pay in R10K (KURO was R40K), but THAT was the best R10K I have ever spent. ... and SD Dstv looks absolutely awesome on it as well. The KURO has one slight disadvantage ... the picture is SO good I sometimes find that I have missed parts of the story I'm watching.
