Damn.

I can't exactly challenge her either, cause I don't know enough about medicine.

Guess I'll have to find another doctor then. Anyone know a good doctor in Cape Town Northern Suburbs?

I learned the hard way, health wise and paying out of my pocket....Doctors do not know everything, and they do not like it when you question their knowledge. Was referred to a cardiologist...., for my unmanageable hypertension...,part of her solution was to place me on beta blockers.... I was placed on such a high dose, that it effected my bloody prostate...Not being able to take a piss, is real fun...-when advising my own doctor about the status of my blocked plumbing...she was insistent that is an infection...-when clearly a quick google search indicated a case of over medicating....anyways....

Kicked my doctor plus the specialist she referred me to the curb...arm yourself with knowledge,...is power! google is your friend....and ask and query...and do research...end of the day, you are the only one that has a vested interest in your well being.

Good advice, thank you friend :)

Glad to hear you sorted out your issues, sounds like it was terrible.

I was actually prescribed anti-biotics though, apparently is because I was coughing (no flem though) and the Influenza and Bacteria tend to overlap, so... I guess that makes sense?

I wouldn't know enough to argue against it.

My throat feels like it's been slashed with a razorblade though

I used to get oral thrush when I took penicillin, when I told the Doc about it he told me to get intestinal flora capsules to take with the antibiotics. Haven't had a problem since.

All in all, it was a worthy experience...taught me, look after yourself, no one else is going to do that....and always look for a more natural approach...all a learning curve..

How does it overlap? Unless you somehow manage to get both a viral and bacterial respiratory tract infection simultaneously, antibiotics aren't going to do squat to benefit you.

Once again, I totally empathise. I tend to drink a lot of hot tea with honey, suck on the occasional menthol lozenge such as Halls (although don't over do that) and, back in ZA, my wonderful doctor prescribed a sort of green anaesthetic throat spray which worked like a charm to kill the pain.

All you can really do is treat the symptoms.

All in all, it was a worthy experience...taught me, look after yourself, no one else is going to do that....

Agreed. Doctors are human and make mistakes. It's important to inform yourself as best as you can and, especially with significant health problems, always get more than one opinion.

They usually prescribe antibiotics to fight off any secondary infections you may be experiencing, it's not for the flu itself.

So he's a critical patient in dire need of preventative care? Willy-nilly prescription of antibiotics is a very real problem.
