Sound/volume issues on some channels

I've just hooked up my LCD to my HDPVR and everything is fine except for the sound on channels broadcast in Dolby Digital 5.1.
When I'm on MM1,MM2, or the HD channel the sound blasts out of the tv and nothing you do on the DSTV remote will change it. You have to reduce the volume with the tv remote which is usually hidden under the couch, with all the loose change. All the other channels work fine.

I have changed the settings on the decoder now to manually select surround sound and this has solved the problem but I shouldn't have to do that. Its supposed to just work! :D
Does anyone else have this small but annoying problem?

The 5.1 feed is a raw feed to your amp/receiver - it's meant to be that way as far as I know. From what you say it doesn't sound like you've got a home theatre system hooked up. If not, 5.1 won't be of any benefit...

Yup, if you get a home theatre system them connect the cable to the amp & relay the volume on the remote control so the remote just control the amp volume, much easier. But for now just use normal stereo audio

Which remote? The amp or DSTV remote?

But my surround sound system doesn't have an HDMI port so I'm only using it for DVD and PS2. And, I'm not really concerned about not getting 5.1 from the tv, I'm more interested to find out if this is normal that I can't adjust the volume when a program is broadcast in 5.1.
