Seeing that Creative is looking after their customers so well, and only want to do their best i.t.o service, I was wandering what other sound card makes are out there, and how would you forumites rate them?

Asus and Razer have their own sound cards as far as I know.

Personally I just use the soundmax addon card that came with my mobo. More of a visual guy so I am not going to notice any difference when it comes to audio so I don't spend the extra cash on a high spec sound card. Glad I didn't as well, guys with creative cards have had countless issues with their drivers and vista while the soundmax drivers have been good since the second week of the launch.:)

A well recommended brand is Auzentech.

Their latest card is basically what the X-Fi should have been. I probably would have bought that rather than the X-Fi if it existed back then.

I love my sound, and while onboard audio is much improved these days, I'm too addicted to good sound to trust it to onboard.

Found this article about Asus's sound cards, the Xonar DX and D2X. For $90 (the DX), you get a superior card to the Creative X-Fi based cards.

Asus, M-Audio(via chipset), it all depends on the chipset the card uses, some cards use the same chipsets.

I'm still deciding whether I should get an xfi Xtremegamer or Asus xonar... :(

Not for gaming sadly, Xtremegamer still tops, but still decent

can you get Auzentech cards in South Africa?
I've never used support from Any company like gigabyte Asus, creative etc. If my hardware goes dodgy - it's more than likely my PC/Powersupply/Eskom supply/environment etc - So rather than fight with some phone operator for 6 months for a replacement, I just get a new one (unless I am sure of a warrentee swop out - which is quite painful in south africa as stocks are not the same as the rest of the world).

I still think the Creative X-fi is a legend card - their software suxors, but I use the features - not the software. I'd love to find a vendor for Auzentech in South Africa, it would be my next purchase....

If you find a supplier then choose the Auzen X-FI™ Prelude
it uses Creative's X-Fi CA20K chipset.

The AuzenTech XPlosion uses the C-Media CMI8770 chipset and you get cheaper cards with this chipset.

I would love to get my hands on a Auzentech Prelude myself. Still no luck finding any company selling their cards in SA :(
