what has any of the opposition achieved ? what has the DA achieved ? absolutely nothing. they're all mouth, and no action...

the ANC has a monopoly in this country.... and it's not to end anytime soon

Man, what do you expect the opposition to do? Make new laws? Run government departments better? They cant, cause they are NOT IN POWER.

What action should they be taking in your opinion?

That is a weak excuse at best for the opposition. IMO, the opposition parties have failed dismally at attracting voters, they are all far too sectional and none has the policies to attract more voters, than their traditional support base.

So part of the state of our governing system can be attributed to their failure.

I don't understand what you are trying to say. Of course, they can't do anything, but seeing that they are the opposition they have even failed miserably at that.

To overthrow the ANC you need the whole country united.

Why would we want to over throw the ANC government?

Who would be the successor?

There is no significant opposition to the ANC because there are no worthy competitors in the race for the government. No other political party has been able to muster any significant support which suggests to me that no other political party has any credibility or business being in governance.

Opposition to the ANC would have to come from within the ranks of the party as stated previously in one of the posts.

That may not really be the case - look at Zimbabwe for instance. The voters continue to vote for the Zanu-PF even though inflation is something like 5000%. The party may have the majority support but what are the peoples reasons for voting for them?

If they don't they'll probably be shot...

The structure of the constituencies is slightly different in that rural constituencies hold as much sway in terms off seats etc as do the urban constituencies. Zanu has support in the rural areas acquired most lightly through violence and intimidation while mdf has greater support in the urban constituencies but seats in urban constituencies in bulawayo and Harare have been merged, (mdf strongholds) resulting in fewer parliamentary seats for mdf. It's quite possible that the majority of Zimbabweans didn't vote zanu pf...

Yeah over throw, replace, doesn't make a difference, my point is replace with WHOM? DA? Don't think so...

ok, we have two choices. we are continue as we are with the ANC, or we replace the ANC with the peoples choice.

Take your pick.

Replacing the ANC requires leadership anyway.

I'm not entirely sure about Zuma being a "bad" thing for this country...

He may at the very least rid cabinet of all the current deadwood and install new people who might TRY and do the job for a bit before giving up.

Agreed!!

what makes things a little more interesting is Tokyo's sudden alignment with JZ.

I reckon Tokyo could have higher aspirations than he is letting on...

I'm definitely voting this time. Of course the ANC is gonna win, but I'm fed up with their incompetent BS. Besides, a weak opposition is better than no opposition.

As far as Zuma goes, I've only seen a few well-rehearsed announcements designed to catch media attention. His shower-style comments are worrying though.

Now to clarify my statement above... I'm not saying Zuma will ultimately be a good thing for this country, but I think he will do some good to start with... and maybe if he has enough brains to surround himself with intelligent people then MAYBE the guavamint will start showing signs of working properly...

More and more ANC supporters are turning away from the ANC. And coupled with the supporters of the opposition, there is sufficient clout to do something.

One of the things a president has to "be" is be/setting a good example. He's hardly that.
