South Africa’s inadequate broadband usage limits

The Internet as a whole – especially when looking at international online services – increasingly caters for broadband users who have very fast, unlimited connections.

None more so than software publishers who are increasingly expecting users and prospective users to be able to download a 4.5GB DVD.

Some publishers even expect that online download is the norm - an example being Microsoft's Technet which now has a preferred shipping method of online download, rather than shipping a DVD. They even offer a financial incentive there for. As the monthly shipping normally consists of 5 or 6 DVD's, sometimes more, this option is simply not possible for an RSA inhabitant.

Yup! online Content delivery is becoming a norm now, because it saves on money and stops Piracy! If I had my way I would have bought all my games on Steam but with 64k it's not worth the long LONG download... too bad we only have a 1 - 3 GB cap's on Telkom's system here

Higher caps are posible telkom just refuses to give it to us! I have uncapped but the service + quality of Aerosat wants to make to rip my hair out!

Oh well you have 2 choices... Wait or leave :)

And once the broadband situation is relieved in South Africa, local hosting service providers will scurry to provide 99.9999% services. Overseas where I host, their service levels are such and if they plan maintenance that may cause a possible 15 minutes downtime I'm notified approximately 2 weeks in advance.

The local providers are not there yet. I'm even expected to read their forum for news about their service downtime and maintenance, or get notification after the event.

So after the usage capping is corrected, we're in for more heartache, that of the local hosting providers service levels.

Oh, and then there are the hosting package fees which are exorbitant. SA lags so far it's not funny.

No sorry, I'll be hosting overseas for many years still. Currency leaving SA.

actually makes piracy much easier... Most softs up for download from a vendor have working kegens on other sites...
or just needs a registry entry to activate, and afaik making an entry in your PC registry is not illegal in any way as the software hasn't been altered or reverse engineered.

What's this crap of doing movies online, i see Telkom and Polka be advertising it lately.
Are they talking about youtube?? lol
I'd love to see someone Do-movies, Do-email, Do-Games . . .on DoBroadband one.

Is there some site I'm not aware of, or are they revering to Multichoice Video on demand (VoD)??

Try playing Second Life ...

http://www.secondlife.com/

with a 3 Gb cap. You can play for about two days total and then you hit your cap. Then that's it for the month! :(

But I guess, according to Telkom, I would be a "bandwidth hog".

I would like to see a graph on how the top 10 websites have grown in bandwidth just for loading the frontpage i.e. the like of news24,myadsl etc every 5years untill now.

Some websites like SundayTimes and iol now has video news inside news stories so the situation has gotten worse. Some of CNN stories on its website have only video links so if you don't have a fast connection or enough bandwidth to last through the month you are screwed.

I remember a while back a news story about internet users also buying newspapers in this country. The low bandwidth caps would be one reason.
An out of bundle low quality 1 min news video of 2MB would cost you the same price as a newspaper.

Seeing as how IS now even caps their "uncapped" offering I dont see why Neotel would even consider doing otherwise if they don't have to.

Oh, something else...

little utilities, like Google Desktop, which comes with Google Pack. I noticed has a lot of background internet transfer activity, so I had to turn it off / uninstall it because I can't afford to have any unmonitored activity going on in the background.

now Google Pack comes with the excellent Sun Star Office Suite, but it's a heft 149 Mb download. To install that on every PC I own is going to use up at least half a Gig of download. This forces me to download it once, find the installation files in the temp folders and then copy those installation files to every other PC I own... a real Schlepp!

This is true also of Microsoft Updates. Instead of letting every PC run their own downloads for MS updates, I have to go and manually copy the updates on a flash disk to every PC.

Telkom's policies are creating more work for users and admins, and keeping us from enjoying the real benefists of true 24/7 connectivity.

Telkom is not really the one to blame for this. Blame it on Government, the main shareholders in Telkom. Why do you think Government is trying its uttermost best to stop competition for Telkom?

It's always great how MyADSL writes articles such as these that essentially mirror the opinions of its member base. You guys are the only big booming voice we have in this country. Thanks for that.

On the note of the article though, I myself have become so aggravated again with this lack of bandwidth.

As many of you know, Bioshock has been up on Steam for preload for a few days now and it's being released tonight. Now I bought HL2 and Episode I over Steam and just love the instant content delivery of it (as in, swipe your credit card the moment the game is released and voila, you're on). No more hassling to go to a blaaady shop! :p

Now I imagine that the Bioshock pre-load is somewhere around 4-5 gigs. That's basically the price of the game itself just for bandwidth. So obviously it makes no economic sense whatsoever to be making use of this wonderful tech. And I for one see online content delivery as the future that is here and now in the rest of the world, except of course for South Africa.

Coz we're special. Retard special. *sigh*

Usually as soon as I'm capped I smoke some pot. I find that a joint helps me over-come the frustration. While under the influence I then buy a second and third account and so on and so on. My pot intake has dramatically increased over the years as files became larger and downloads and capping increased...that is apalling!
