The South African Breweries (SAB) has warned that around half of its front line workforce - 2,000 people are in the firing line should it not be able to continue bottling or distribution duties.

The real problem will be the pent-up demand when the restrictions are lifted! I regularly visit Newlands (CT), and the queues for spring water used to be long (before the lockdown). The Newlands Spring is across the road from SAB. Can you imagine how long the queues would be if there was a window to buy booze...

A spokesperson confirmed to Business Insider SA that it had received consent from government to transport beer to its depots. But it's too late for some of the alcohol, and she said that SAB had to start "disposing" of some of the beer last week.
