Lol jokes on this economist. School all over the world is a waste of time. Doesn't prepare you for the real world at all. I never learned about debt, savings and different savings mediums, taxes and how to file them, bank accounts etc. etc. Vital stuff I learned way too late.

It depends where you got your Matric from.
A matric certificate on it's own regardless of where it came from is worth nothing.
A lot of degrees / diplomas these days aren't worth the paper they are printed on.

I agree 100%. We see the youths (black and white) that come in when we have job interviews. A requirement for applying is to be able to complete a 2-page application. When they get to the question, "City and country of birth" some put down "muther" and "borned in hosstal" or "farm"

One fellow claimed to have studied Nuclear Technology. When we told him he was over-qualified for a trainee locksmith, we said there were probably vacancies in Iran as they employed people of his calibre. He wanted to know where Iran was, so we said "north of Joburg"

I know two kids who recently matriculated from public schools here and still managed to find work in other countries. One even had to do a re-write to get his. Paying their rent and putting food in their bellies while they study part time.

Could have told this economist the same story 15 years ago. To his next article and surprise, neither are any of South African university degrees,
