South Africa’s most valuable export – brilliant South Africans

Thanks ANC...

For all the ills afflicting SA due to ANC bungling, I'm pretty sure the majority of the people on this list didn't leave because of the ANC. I'm thinking they left because SA industry, in general - and to this day, tend to be conservative and/or followers of trends.

The ANC, and generally the preceding governments too, does not create a environment through policy and action to enable such enterprises and such to be easily developed and flourish here.

Nope. Staying in SA is actually quite beneficial to the business crowd - fast moving market, very few competitors skill wise, living costs are pretty low, big houses and great lifestyle.

The negatives that have arisen under ANC rule overshadow them though (crime, AA, broken everything...the usual list).

I was actually expecting to be more or less the only SA guy here....lol...nope Afrikaans is the second most spoken language in the company.

Its so awesome seeing Vinny making strides.

A few of us here on the forum are mates with him or his boet. They came from humble beginnings and used to work in their dad's corner shop selling the kiefest bunny chow and samusas...and then you have this useless bunch playing the victim card as if the world owes them everything.

For most of your points, they paint a picture of a comfortable lifestyle, as opposed to one where you're forced to innovate i.e. adapt or die. As for the fast moving market, that's debatable, and moreover entirely dependent on the industry in question.

Problem is the "adapt or die" part applies exactly to that area where I definitely don't want that to be the rules (crime & safety)

"the only winning move is not to play"

Great article about successful Safricans. thanks to their "privileged" schooling and obviously great upbringing they made their mark.

Interesting comment. Hows Norway nowadays?

True, and I believe that govt can do more to promote startups. However, we may be missing one important thing: the US has the money and structures in place to drive all their innovation :D

Yes and no. They did leave because they're conservative and followers of trends. The trends in this country don't look good for business, and they're economically conservative because they're risk averse. The reasons those are the case is because of ANC ineptitude however.

I know plenty of people who have left SA, and now my own family is initiating the long term plan to emigrate. If a country has unproductive and overpriced labour, overpriced electricity, slow internet, an inconvenient geographic location, a horrific level of violent crime, high tax rates, rolling blackouts, a devaluing currency, exorbitant import costs, an uncertain political future and employment laws that compel the hiring of employees based on criterion other than competence then it's going to suffer tremendously.

Mean time most of the people that left have done so due to the fact that they quite aware of the opportunity limitation here in SA or anywhere but the U.S. when it comes to technology.

Do the same report for Aus, Uk or Canada and I promise the success stories will look a lot less great (especially non UK).

Aside from where families moved before they hatched their ideas and SA is claiming things that a fool would see is dumb to do, most moved due to the business opportunities that will exist there or their business were bought by larger US based corporates which allowed them to pursue things there.

I'm not saying things are great here but the perception often given is that once there you will be brilliant which is just false.

Ps. People who left for other developing countries like Aus, Nz heck even UK.. Ask them how things have changed lately and what % of their decision they regret. All I'm saying is this, even if everything was perfect in SA, not moving to the U.S. would be foolish as it is the largest market for some things.

Thanks for nothing

Thanks ANC...
I don't think the ANC's heart is really in it. They are not set on exporting people who don't vote for them. I'd be impressed if they negotiated a 10th-generation right of return to these non-voters' country of origin - the Netherlands, Belgium, France, India, Germany, Malaysia, UK, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Botswana, Central African Republic, Ivory Coast, etc. They clearly don't have much political clout, which is rather sad.

That ^

ANC fans!! Really! why is it that in every thread we have to end up talking about the ANC.

I'm proud of our country. Nothing can bring us down! and yes, we are more clever than any other country. as for technology and innovation, we were the first to go wireless through a technology of black magic! people out there have even been flying on brooms wayyyyy before airplanes were discovered LOL!

Interesting!! Can you prove that though or tell us where can we go see that.

Can only speak for myself, but I never left because of the ANC. I left because I wanted see what it was like to live in another country. I had every intention of returning. It's only when I came back to SA the first time, for in laws birthday that I decided that I would rather remain in the UK. That's when it really hit home that my lifestyle in the UK was many levels better than it ever was in SA, despite owing a larger house with big garden, pool. The environment, politically is so much better. The quality of public services is so much better. The aggression is less. The problem isn't people leaving SA. People leave other countries. The problem is that the quality life is so much better overseas. There is more to quality of life than a large garden with a swimming pool. This is easily compensated for by the easy access to some great holiday destinations at very affordable prices. Living in the UK, I get more opportunities to travel abroad than I ever did in SA. France, Spain, Italy are great destinations and are very affordable when paid in £.

I visit SA every 2 years. That's enough for me.

If I leave SA it will be purely and 100% because of the ANC.

People who as much as associate themselves with them, are not fit to govern anything. They are also determined to actively prohibit progress wherever possible.
