South Africa can’t wait for 4G spectrum stand-off before starting on 5G

ICASA must begin the process to assign radio frequency spectrum for 5G networks, MTN chief technology and information officer Giovanni Chiarelli told MyBroadband.

At a recent 5G demonstration conducted by Ericsson and MTN, Ericsson said that although the standards for 5G have not been finalised yet, the radio specifications are fully standardised.

Use existing spectrum, I can afford it - why South Africa do not?

Spectrum needs to be technology agnostic. Assign spectrum to operators and let them work out how to best manage it so we don't have this unsustainable process every time there's a new technology.

Spot on correct! Spectrum is by definition technology neutral. It is the regulators that screw things up, aided and abetted by the network providers and manufacturers.

Well at least they can't obfuscate and propoganda.

When the likes of much less developed countries - like all of them - publically chaste us, there is no hiding from that truth.

Hopefully our powers that be will just do the right thing out of pure embarrassment?

Long shot, but here's hoping and praying.

Just like they're shamed when caught with hands in the cookie jar?

Don't hold your breath :(
