South Africa could get 1,000MW of extra power from Mozambique — electricity minister

Mozambique will supply electricity-starved South Africa with 100MW of power immediately and an additional 600MW in six months’ time, electricity minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said.

A further 1,000 megawatts will be supplied in the long-term, he said at a media briefing at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Tuesday, 12 June 2023.

Buy from Moz at X price and sell to Zim at half that price because they can't afford the Moz price.

totally understand, but the fact is they produce more than they consume, which is what the main goal should be for any country.
It's easy when you don't have 33000MW peak demand. We use 1500MW of their hydro, so we are using more than half of what they generate. They are also blessed with a massive dam up north (built in the 70's by the Portuguese).

We have over 52GW of installed capacity. The ANC just broke it all.

They don't have enough economic activity to make use of their electricity so the most logical thing is to sell it to those who can use it.

Utterly mental to think we reached an era that the 6th poorest country in a world have more surplus energy than us....
Nothing new here. Mozambique has been exporting electricity to South Africa since the 1970s when Caborra Bassa dam was completed.

Say that again slower and maybe it will click on why they can have a surplus...
Firstly in Africa the largest producer and user of Electricity used to be SA, then Egypt, we're now 2nd but only as Egypt has finally sorted out their issues and doesn't have load shedding anymore. But out of 54 countries in the whole of Africa we're second, just let that sink in.
We also have already been getting power from Moz since about 2007 and previously we would've been if the lines weren't all destroyed during the wars.

Nope it hasn't, for almost 20 years it didn't due to that pesky war they had. The lines were fixed in 1997 but it only really started sending to us again in 2007

Well the dam was done by the portugese, the electrical side was Escom

Only snag may be droughts - I think they are just coming out of a bad one.

I go there for work and the sentiment is clearly they do not want to rely on South Africa for as much as possible.
We’re becoming the clowns of the continent lol

South Africa is their biggest trading partner, we sent the most number of soldiers as part of the SADC mission in Mozambique, they are building all those power projects because there is a market for it, and they will very much be depending on SA to buy the power. You people should stop going to foreign countries and listening to strange tales.

The most likely thing is that South Africans are clowns in foreign countries judging by their appetite for legendary tales.
