South Africa defends use of coal as it seeks progress on climate

South Africa’s deputy energy minister expects the latest round of climate talks will make global markets cleaner starting next year and defended her nation’s coal use as a way to reduce poverty.

“With the Germans, they can say ‘We’re moving from driving a Corolla to a BMW,’ while we are still trying to get the bicycle,” said Thembisile Majola, in an interview in London. [Bloomberg]

Either a translation error, or someone got the wrong message:

South Africa technically has enough power supply to match its demand, but the electrons are frequently not able to reach their destination because of the unreliable networks, so finance is needed.

Many of the nation’s regions are still suffering economic depression and dealing with tuberculosis, which is linked to cooking with coal.

WTF!?

Its 36 degrees in my town. And 37-38 for the rest of the week. Zero clouds. Why are we not using solar more?

Special rules for looters? Looks like most cadres are buying German BMW's. To be fair many are driving Porsches which explains SA having the largest Porsche showroom outside Germany. When did tuberculosis become an issue? Comrades, do not fall for the old white capital tuberculosis trick aimed at treating the poor while putting cadres in Corollas. The struggle must not be swayed. One cadre member, one luxury German sedan.

What utter garbage she speaks.
And she is the one chosen to speak on our behalf.
As usual everybody else is probably laughing at her.

Wanted to fact check your Porsche claim as it sounded pretty ridiculous. According to this article
Ridiculousnessness
We have the largest Porche centre in the WORLD.

We should be the worlds leader in renewable tech today... the loadshedding f/up a decade ago was the perfect time to kick that industry off... could have a huge industry out of it all by now, supplying the world, developing the tech, dirt cheap electricity supplying the continent, translating to massive investment, world center for industry, low unemployement and poverty etc etc etc... but then what would happen to gupta/zuma coal and uranium mines?

Largest Porsche centre in the world doesn't necessarily mean largest Porsche market. But I see your point.

There is nothing wrong with what he said, not sure why people are struggling with it.

True, if you understand how electricity works on a deeper level, you could refer to the transmission of current as "electron flow"

I assume this is a reference to Tumi Morake's bicycle stolen by apartheid.

It's a weird way of saying it but he;s not wrong.

I don't find it weird though, reading that first thing that came to mind was electron flow.

Cooking with coal just means the electricity used was coal generated, kinda like a diesel locomotive that runs a diesel generator to produce electricty for its electric motors. It's pretty obvious that there was no reference to an actual coal burning stove.

lol the germans destroyed an ancient forest for their coal fix. whats funny is how they lambasted trump as the evil orange that will pollute the world to death.
