South Africa enters race to host Formula 1

Best place for a track is by me, we had a proper street track that was like something out from GT or Forza but unfortunately the bastards who lived along to that route cried by the metro and put a fark ton of speed bumps on that road.

Inb4 49% BEE ownership of Liberty Media and FIA.

No. Just no. Same stupid thinking as soccer world cup. Muppets cant even fix a pothole. Let first countries host first world events for the rich. Let african shtholes try to deliver basic services.

The government going to demand 30% of F1 then ?

COCT will host the F1 and pass on the costs to the ratepayers

Comes across as illegal street racing if speed humps was the solution

Wonder if the muppets advocating for this live in Cape Town and would be happy to pay for their stupid support of this

We had this discussion like 8 to 10 years ago on my broadband. The whole deal fell apart or should I say, did not even get off the ground. Any F1 undies out there remember why?

That was actually quite an amusing watch.

Does look like it's a bit more real this time but I still don't see it actually happening for a while yet.

Oh yeah I’m sure it’s a few years away and will have very many upgrade requirements.

But when Red Bull start spending money on it then you know there is something tangible going on.

Have to give RBs marketing team props though, they got the SA "vibe" pretty much spot on, especially the "Security" :p

It’s getting very real.

My brother's film crew shot this.

As a kid I went to the 9 Hours in the 70s and that was epic - overnight camping and endless entertainment by drunken spectators. And F1 from the 70s with Stewart, Hill, Clark etc. until it ended with Senna, Lauda etc.

But personally I'd prefer a street race in CT. Kyalami is now a soulless shadow of its former self. Selwyn Nathan and MSA destroyed it a long time ago when Leeuwkop corner was changed to turn left.

I watched the "9 Hours" on YouTube and it was tragic seeing the crowd turnout - I think Zwartkops gets a bigger crowd on a single grandstand.

When they still turned right at Leeuwkop

Yeah they said the same about the soccer World Cup. Rugby World Cup. Cricket World Cup. So… yeah. It will happen.
The only reason we got to host the SWC is because it had to go to an African country. In rugby and cricket we are a big name and there is no interest from any rich/big countries, bar a few.

That said, I am not that pessimistic about our chances here, even though we obviously can't afford it.
