In my opinion, the US copyright duration of the author's life plus seventy years is absurd.

Well, whether you like it or not is irrelevant. The US has the power to destroy countries with silly sanctions like this. So, all that matters is that everyone listen up to the US, do what they say or simply face the consequences.

Lemme get this straight:
The ANC wants to impose EWC on ALL property rights in SA.
The US, on the other hand Darren, wants to protect their own property rights in SA
So the US's property rights Trumps our SAfrican property rights.
AmIRight?

If America doesn't watch itself it is going to sanction themselves into oblivion/irrelevance and isolate themselves.

Americans should take a critical look at Trump's track record as a businessman and carefully consider if they still want to entrust important economics issues to him.

It's not only Trump that has done this, past presidents like Obama used SWIFT as a weapon by blocking certain countries from the system.

Countries have now been working on ways to circumvent SWIFT and create their own system.

America acting like the big dog on the block has worked in the past but is now working against them, slowly but surely countries have got fed up with the US and their bullying tactics and are seeking alternatives.

It's absurd that it even lasts the author's life. Frankly if they don't keep creating then they don't deserve continuing income and should consider getting a job.

It should be even shorter for corporate owned copyright.

It has become ever more apparent how easily the US could go rogue. They were once a trusted ally. Now they're more like that unstable uncle. Could any time turn up waving a loaded gun after a two week booze and speed binge.

The ANC agrees with you and have the same thinking.... thought changing our laws would make it legal for them and they would be untouchable. Unfortunately, not the way the world works.

This is what the Headline should say :

US Government Threatening To Kill Free Trade With South Africa After Hollywood Complained It Was Adopting American Fair Use Principles

The thing is the MPAA and the rest of the anti-free market rent seekers like them hate fair use. It is a thorn in their side. It interferes with their wealth transfer scam.

In my opinion, it should be legal to make copies of out of print books for personal use. After all, you're not depriving the copyright holder of any income if the book isn't available for purchase. However, you often see, with specialised academic books, that the book is available under a print on demand system. The book isn't actively in print, but it isn't technically out of print either. One the one hand, this is good as it allows you to get an actual brand new physical copy of the book if you want one, but it's also an impediment to the fair use of an out of print book. These print on demand books tend to cost a fortune, in the thousands of rands, which seems absurd. Almost all of this money goes to the publisher. Most academics who write books, have no interest in making any money out of them. Sometimes, the author isn't even alive anymore.

Sad thing is, it is most probably going to be extended again when Mickey Mouse is nearing the expire date, just like Disney did the last time, i.e. lobbied and forced/convinced the changes.

Steamboat Willy was the first version of Mickey Mouse and it was published in 1928[ii]. To make a long story short – for those of us who are not history buffs and prefer simplicity – there were in fact multiple extensions for the protections afforded under U.S. copyright law to works created in the last century. One of the notable ones, worthy of a mention, is the 1976 Copyright Act, which provided the creation with protection for up to 75 years (for works created before 1978 that were published or registered). Thereafter, in 1998 the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act (aka the “Mickey Mouse” Act) extended the protection up to 95 years for such works[iii]. Essentially, this provides Disney with copyright protection for the character Mickey Mouse until the beginning of 2024 – the time in which Mickey Mouse will become part of the public domain under copyright law.
