Vodacom and MTN's incredible work in South Africa

Hurtling at 120km/h down the freeway between Johannesburg and Durban, I’m conducting a telephonic interview with a telecommunications executive.

Over the course of 25 minutes — around 50km — the call was never dropped, and we could both hear one another clearly the whole way.

@Jan

As much as I dont like the operators for their high prices of services you have to acknowledge they have done well technically on a network level.

Having to work around loadshedding on their national networks, theft/vandalism, imcompetent regulator and a steep R/$.

In the US and UK the operators have to contend with aspirational lunatics burning 5G towers down. What else make their jobs hard?

For years I had dropped calls between Marlboro and Rivonia travelling towards William Nicol. Anecdotal but like clockwork.

The Networks are good, but they miss the opportunity to be excellent time and again, they are determined to not take that extra little step. :(
