Turns out, mobile data isn’t the only data in South Africa that is expensive. In comparison to the rest of the world, fibre is too - really, really expensive.

A new survey by Picodi.com looked at pricing from 233 fibre internet providers in 62 countries and found that South Africans pay the most for 100 Mbps uncapped fibre in their homes.

South Africans will on average fork out an astounding R1,273.84 ($87.24) per month.

Would be nice to see how we stack up against the rest of Africa. Unfortunately all they did here was nitpick this so SA sits stone last.

I was chatting to guys from Finland and Holland and the UK on ESO when I was playing earlier this year. We got on to this topic and worked out I was paying more for my 4mb uncapped fibre than the guys in Holland where paying to 200mb uncapped.

Edit, it definitly was the Finnish oke.

SA is so far behind the rest of the world when it comes to internet its insane.

at this rate we will never catch up ever.

You'd be surprised. Internet in NZ is generally worse; got friends there who struggle to get more than 5Mb

Other than food and maybe housing, SA pays a shitload more for a lot of things than the rest of the world. That and you don't even always get what you pay for.

I'm ignorant to the rest of Africa in terms of fibre. How many African countries have fibre to home?

Edit:
Monthly costs.
I just did a quick google (Hai was the first hit in most cases), Hai Internet, Kenya: R1656 for 100/100 unlimited fibre. Hai, Uganda: R2500 for 100/100 unlimited fibre. Hai, Internet, Rwanda: R3100 100/50 unlimited. Liquid Telecom, Zambia: R1980 20/20 (Usage not specified)

So compared to some other African countries we are cheaper but in terms of infrastructure South Africa is way ahead of most African countries (My opinion based on experience living / working) so wouldn't it be more fitting to compare it to more developed countries?

The Russian government subsidizes it, but also monitors it. :)

But seriously though, we are at the arse end of africa, getting cables and infrastructure here is expensive. Our cities are far removed from each other, and connecting them is also expensive.

Brazil and Argentina are on the same latitude if not further south in some places, both cheaper.
Places like Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan arent exactly on the beaten track either, and yet they manage to do it cheaper.

No , we are simply being ripped off left right and centre , from mobile to internet.

Looking at the shear number of connections to Brazil, probably competition driving down their pricing.

I don't know about Argentina. :( As to Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan - they might be cheaper, but how widespread is their coverage? Can you get super cheap internet only in like 5 houses in the country or something.

I'm not arguing that we're getting gouged, just saying, there is some factors that one has to take into account.

Sadly, when fibrehoods started up I paid R600 for 100/50... then a couple years back they sold to vumatel, now it R1200+... they said it was to bring prices inline with vumatels, my argument was why doesn't vumatel bring their packages in line with fibrehoods, never got an answer or reason why its double the price... nothing changed other than service going down the drain:confused:

With 123Net at the moment and loving it. R499 for a 15/15/15 line (15 local / 15 national / 15 international - all treated as separate lines)

I dont think its fair to compare south africa to other first world countries , when our telecoms execs are not focusing on finding ways to enrich themselves they constantly dealing with infrastructure getting stolen by communities as well as unions striking etc.

Having incompetent staff also plays a role and can hamstring the progress severely, take those factors into consideration and i would say we not that far off.

This is not difficult to understand. South Africa's middle class (that is, the group of people who can pay for this) is tiny.

If you manage to take home R11k take home income after tax, you will be in the top 5% of earners in the country. This infrastructure is expensive and there simply isn't enough people to spread out that capital cost over.

100MBPS costs about R5k in Namibia...only the Top 2% can afford it

And SA had an advanced and well developed telephone network back in the '70s and early' 80s. Today...
