South Africa needs R4 trillion to ditch coal power — Study

South Africa, the world's 13th-biggest source of greenhouse gases, will need to spend $250 billion (R4 trillion) over the next three decades closing down its coal-fired power plants and replacing them with green energy, according to a study.

In addition to closing down the country's coal-fired plants and building wind and solar power plants, money will need to be spent compensating coal-dependent communities whose livelihoods are threatened by the change, the Blended Finance Taskforce and the Centre for Sustainability Transitions at Stellenbosch University said.

More like R40 trillion once corruption and tenderpreneurs are added to the equation. I can't see this happening any time soon. What about installing R200K solar PV systems across 10 million households? That's R2 trillion.

Probably doable if we get rid of the incompetents, thieves and saboteurs in government..

In addition to closing down the country's coal-fired plants
They close themselves down on a regular basis

will need to spend $250 billion (R4 trillion) over the next three decades closing down its coal-fired power plants
Well more taxes on their way, and few BEE millionaires on the horizon.

money will need to be spent compensating coal-dependent communities
And more handouts on the way

Hey Google...

How many coal power stations are in South Africa?

->South Africa already has 15 coal plants with a nominal capacity of more than 38,000 megawatts (MW) ( 38GW - 2021 - Availability: Crap!)

How many GW of power is planned for ?
  • $125 billion (R2 trillion) on 150 gigawatts of solar and wind power plants (Availability: Astonishingly better or equal to most of our old coal stations)
  • $18 billion (R284 billion) on 30 gigawatts of natural gas-fired power generation
Total: 180GW

So...
This is not "To ditch coal" - This is "To ditch coal AND expand the grid capacity by over 100GW"

Now... Hey Google how much does Eskom spend on coal a year? http://www.anchoredinlaw.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Summary-on-Eskom-Coal-Costs.pdf (not going to do an exhaustive search - that's a neat little summary I found for 2020)
->R58bn pa

Now... Hey Google how much does Eskom spend on diesel to make up for shortfalls a year? https://www.businesslive.co.za/bloo...osts-rising-to-r209bn-as-coal-plants-stumble/
-> Optimistically under current conditions R20.9bn, Pessimistically... R35.9bn (I laugh - That was before this whole thing in Ukraine properly sunk in)

So... Total coal and diesel spend over the next 28 years (optimistically to be kind) if we continue with the s**t show that coal power has turned into in SA, and if no inflations (lol): R2.2tn

Make your own conclusions.

What's the loss factor when you convert that power into data?

Alex Epstein explains in detail why this is an utterly ridiculous and profoundly damaging objective.

Published this week, arriving later today from Amazon (I'm in Dallas TX):

Fossil Future: Why Global Human Flourishing Requires More Oil, Coal, and Natural Gas--Not Less

Blurb said:
The New York Times bestselling author of The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels draws on the latest data and new insights to challenge everything you thought you knew about the future of energy

For over a decade, philosopher and energy expert Alex Epstein has predicted that any negative impacts of fossil fuel use on our climate will be outweighed by the unique benefits of fossil fuels to human flourishing--including their unrivaled ability to provide low-cost, reliable energy to billions of people around the world, especially the world’s poorest people.

And contrary to what we hear from media “experts” about today’s “renewable revolution” and “climate emergency,” reality has proven Epstein right:

• Fact: Fossil fuels are still the dominant source of energy around the world, and growing fast—while much-hyped renewables are causing skyrocketing electricity prices and increased blackouts.
• Fact: Fossil-fueled development has brought global poverty to an all-time low.
• Fact: While fossil fuels have contributed to the 1 degree of warming in the last 170 years, climate-related deaths are at all-time lows thanks to fossil-fueled development.

What does the future hold? In Fossil Future, Epstein, applying his distinctive “human flourishing framework” to the latest evidence, comes to the shocking conclusion that the benefits of fossil fuels will continue to far outweigh their side effects—including climate impacts—for generations to come. The path to global human flourishing, Epstein argues, is a combination of using more fossil fuels, getting better at “climate mastery,” and establishing “energy freedom” policies that allow nuclear and other truly promising alternatives to reach their full long-term potential.

Today’s pervasive claims of imminent climate catastrophe and imminent renewable energy dominance, Epstein shows, are based on what he calls the “anti-impact framework”—a set of faulty methods, false assumptions, and anti-human values that have caused the media’s designated experts to make wildly wrong predictions about fossil fuels, climate, and renewables for the last fifty years. Deeply researched and wide-ranging, this book will cause you to rethink everything you thought you knew about the future of our energy use, our environment, and our climate.

"$18 billion (R284 billion) on 30 gigawatts of natural gas-fired power generation"

Are they saying they can replace almost all the capacity of coal with gas for the same price as one overpriced Medupi? Sounds like a bargain.
