South Africa lost R15 billion in taxes due to cigarette and alcohol ban

I think we need to be vaguely fair to Mama and the Don.

Even if they hadn't banned the sale of booze and smokes, the level of tax collected would have shrunk anyway. With all the taverns and such closed the volume of booze being bought would have slowed considerably... I'd say we'd have seen a 30 - 40% reduction in consumption purely due to the taverns being closed and less people buying smokes with the smaller amount of money they had.

True, there would be a substantial reduction.

However, when we magic R500B as a COVID Relief grant out of the anus of a dying buck, it would behoove us to not also cut our income. R15B would mitigate 3% of the loss sustained by the relief fund. It's not a ton, but 3% is still a fair amount given we didn't have the R500B to spare.

Clearly everyone should stop paying taxes as they don't need it according to Mama Zoom, and can also be supported by a bankrupt UIF.

The whole lockdown has cost income and taxes and was a bad idea, not just the specific ban on alcohol and cigarettes.

100% on this front.

Every little bit helps cushion the R500bn relief grant...... but its ok, money is just a concept to this lot.

Even then 30-40% of 15 Billion is better than forkol.

A Professor from Potch called it nothing more than Zuma and Cele's personal hobbies to enforce this ban.

Note: No SARS tax code was hurt by this carton
