If fracking can be given the go-ahead, we could tap into abundant reserves under the Karoo.

Pity that the green-woke would rather see the Karoo paved with solar panels before they concede for a single fracking hole to be drilled.
You don't "pave" with solar panels. The damage to the ecosystem is far greater with fraking.

Sure, using rare earth metals to store said energy is horrible, but what else are the Chinese going to do with all that Lithium?

No it probably is right, the Finnish calculation is made on paying to deliver a service to the people. They just haven't taken into account theft, cadres and government...

Then the Finns are idiots

Perhaps time for them to crawl our from under those rocks

Earth based civilization(s) cannot even harness ALL the energy reaching the planet (Type 1) and you are hoping for type 2 civilization tech !!!

PS: Humans still need to increase global energy intake by about 10,000x before we are a type 1 civilization as per Kardashev scale. It might just be safer for humans to burn carbon based stuff before we unleash that kind of energy on ourselves (about 2,000,000,000x more than a type 1 civilization)

I say keep on load-shedding and revive the PBMR project. Fvck EU they going to put us through an endless cycle of debt, they need us more than we need them. If only the ANC had an iota of intelligence…
What exactly do the eu need SA for?

How so?
Also, what sense does it make to pursue to renewables route in this country when there is an abundance of natural gas and coal, the latter of which we cannot keep abreast of, exporting to "green" Europe?

There is also an abundance of sunlight, double Germany I believe.

South Africa is almost the perfect candidate for renewable energy. Pity about the lack of vision.

How is fracking worse for the Karoo environment than paving it with solar panels?
