South Africa Plans to Make mRNA Covid-19 Vaccines Under WHO Deal

South Africa is planning to make vaccines locally using messenger RNA, the breakthrough technology of the global inoculation effort against Covid-19.

The manufacturing will be conducted by the state-owned Biovac Institute, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the World Health Organization, told reporters Monday. That will be part of a broader vaccine technology-transfer hub in the country, he said.

Made in SA? Finally a perfectly rational and legitimate reason to not want to get vaccinated.
Usually I would agree with a statement like this, but not in this case. The skills and technology currently at the Biovac Institute is world class, mainly due to the global vaccine giants like Pfizer, MSD, Sanofi-Pasteur etc having had a hand in it's development. All the IP and design of the facilities was done as part of a tech transfer agreement. In essence, The BI is just a local manufacturer for the vaccine companies, but owned by government. They're constantly monitored by the pharma companies for compliance.

Other pharmaceutical companies have no authority nor jurisdiction over Biovac.

What you are implying is that the pharmaceutical industry operates the same as the taxi industry, and we all know how that is "self-regulated".
