Solar and wind can't fix South Africa's power crisis, says analyst

While South Africa is leading the continent's transition to renewable energy, it is unrealistic to think that 590 million of Africa's residents, or even South Africa's 60 million residents, can be supplied with renewable energy.

This is according to Gracelin Baskaran, mining economist and research director of the energy security and climate change programme at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies.

He is correct, we have huge untapped gas resources or even from Namibia and Mozambique

This comes at a high cost. Using the US as an example, Baskaran said it would cost $2.2 trillion (R42 trillion) for the transmission grid upgrades required to supply 85% of the country’s population with renewable energy.

He clearly does not understand the differences between the US and South Africa.

In South Africa, a lot of our power is centrally produced inland and then transmitted to the coasts. in the US its a lot more distributed.

With renewables in SA, generations will be based mostly along the coast and in the northern cape that can then be sent back up the same lines currently used to transmit coal power the other way.

So the upgrades you need will mostly be some management systems adjustments, you don't need to build new pylons.'

but people with vested interests (mining experts like this guy) seem to ignore that fact.

Another "expert" coming out of the woodwork. Our transmission needs to be upgraded regardless. In fact after the country got used to reduced electricity demand I'm sure we have a lot less capacity than we had in 2007.

such bullshit, a person who works in mining cannot be expected to provide an biased opinion in something that lines mining companies pockets and tieing to the grib cost is stupid because the grib will still need to upgraded. Stop posting dumb **** like this

Should focus on getting the ANC and EFF out of the country chase them back to Zimbabwe seeing that they love that place so much.

Spoken like a true mining economist. And for the ANC, it is hard to steal sunshine

That which should not be mentioned 'fracking'

Sure many want to push for it
That is the Karoo, not Namibia. Namibia is supposed to have offshore fields but no one has drilled yet or something. Anyway, about the Karoo, they should leave that place alone. Nowhere in the world has the same kind of geology like they have there and will be a ecological disaster as we will be a beta testers, nevermind the amount of water that fracking needs which is scarce in the desert, and double nevermind that its all theory/myth that Karoo has gas as no one has actually found any of great quantity afaik.
