South Africa to offer Starlink deal

South Africa’s government plans to offer Elon Musk a workaround of local Black ownership laws for his Starlink internet service to operate in the country, aiming to ease tensions with both the billionaire and US President Donald Trump.

The offer will come at a last-minute meeting planned for Tuesday night between Musk or his representatives and a delegation of South African officials traveling with President Cyril Ramaphosa, according to three people familiar with the discussions.

It's a joke.
What - posting the same article 2 hrs later?

What most people don't realise is that Starlink is desperate to get into South Africa to build out their groundstations to service all the neighbouring countries who already have Starlink. The multitude of transoceanic cables coming into South Africa and South Africa's relatively (compared to its regional neighbours) advanced telecommunications infrastructure makes it the logical choice to locate the groundstations.

Can you imagine the amount of sleep they must be losing over the pennies sub-Saharah Africa generates...

I guess they will just have to comfort themselves with money from the rest of the world

Its not about the current business.. its about the future business opportunities that Africa presents if it gets it shyte together.

Well you are spot on about the cable concentration here, but I doubt that it is more then a 'desirable' location.

I assure you these are all pennies on the dollar and 99% of the time not worth the effort. Take SA for example. The ANC needs foreign direct investment for its own survival but will not allow it. That's the usual mentality.

The groundstations don't just help regional customers, they form part of an entire network of groundstations that provide resilience for the entire Starlink system. The problem with the southern hemisphere is that there is a distinct lack of land and lots of ocean. The lack of any meaningful groundstations in the southern half of Africa is problematic because there is essentially a massive black hole between South America and Australia in both directions, which means satellites have to rely on laser links between themselves until they can offload the traffic to a groundstation. More groundstations means less latency for all Starlink customers, not just the ones in the same region as the groundstations.

when your the richest man in the world, even the ANC will sell their soul to you, only delay tactic is for how much, and will the ANC get any kickback.

whats funny is nobody seems to care or notice come elections when the ANC campaigns in the townships among the poor.
