Another piece of sensationalism from the NY Times, expropriation is not seizing farms - they are buying the farms - it's explained in the article - but the heading reeks of sensationalism - shame on you lot for not being able to understand the difference

from Wikipedia: "Expropriation ... is characterized by confiscation of the foreign asset, and a pittance payment. This payment is sometimes a formality, and may not represent an acceptable reparation, because the transaction is not one to which the owners, as forced sellers, have freely consented. Moreover, adding to the complaints of the owners, the competition of any other buyers is excluded. Finally, the expropriated business is quite frequently a successful and established one, rather than one that is still highly risky or even failing. Such expropriation thus deprives the owners of their reasonable expectations of reliable returns from such a proven business."

Does that really sound like a sale to you?

It is a very sober piece. I don't see any sensationalism in it at all. Perhaps you could highlight those bits for me.

Odd how this story never made it to the newspaper this morning.

Skeptik, I think he means the heading. I feel the article was written neutrally but the heading is nonsense and gives SA a Zim relationship deliberately.

That headline has an element of sensationalism to it.

In the eyes of the beholder maybe, Then again I do not see anything wrong with the facts printed in the article! So whats the point!

It is actually very simple... The majority of people only read the headlines and then make assumptions based on that! The heading is meant to sell newspapers but what about the thousands of people that just drive past viewing the headline and do not buy. They are walking around talking about how SA is now like Zimbabwe, Mbeki must have lost his mind! The choice of words makes the heading bad and damaging for SA.

Nothing wrong with the heading. Its the truth! FActs!

South Africa and the fraud, crime rate and the truth is damaging in itself. And do not forget Zuma! So whats the point...must people abstain from printing facts to make us look good! C'mon...not another zealot?

He published this all over the states and IOL. Now although I fully support lobbying support against the incompetence of some of your ministers, the way he play's with words makes it sound like the wild west down here. Yes we live in fear, but we are not shooting around every corner every day! Playing with words and people's minds is not a privilage that comes with the freedom of press. SA has allot of oppertunities and is a country I love in heart and soul, and these journalists are damaging our reputation because they want to sell more newspapers, they are in it for the money.

Expropriation is a normal tool of all governments. It happens everywhere.
The content was good, but the headline was sensationalist garbage.

pupa : So what. There is a lot of crime in this country. A lot of it.
But there is most certainly not shooting around every corner. I do not know how you can even argue that with Chatmaster. It is a fact. Test it yourself. Take a walk around the block. If you witness the shooting, you might possibly have a small case. Otherwise Chatmaster is correct

lol, deaf, lol

Nope DEATH! as stated as according to the comments here; I am over-specifying the crimes, I am selective in hearing and I do not know what is really happening in this country so I must be dead already!

pupa : You can post articles till you are blue in the face. As long as there is a single corner around which there isn't a gun-fight, it makes Chatmasters argument right and yours wrong.
You might have a general point, but as far as your argument with Chatmasters goes, you are 100% wrong
