Without wanting to detract from SA's performance so far, this Aussie unit is clearly the worst I have seen in my lifetime.Only Starc,Warner and Smith are test quality.

It's called rebuilding. Once an era of domination goes away, it doesn't just get replaced by players who will dominate from the get go. Can't think of any team that hasn't gone through bad results after the retirement of a core group of dominant players.

I am not going to say we have made it through our patch of rebuilding altogether, but our batting line up is taking shape nicely. When Steyn and Philander retire, we will go through bad bowling performances again

Steyn is basically already retired given that he only plays for a couple of sessions each series, and our backup bowlers have stepped up. Our batting should be OK for the next few years.

Australia meanwhile has been rebuilding for the past 8 years, culminating in the rubbish side they have today. It's not looking much better for their future either, since they don't seem to be providing much through their domestic setup either. We can at least put forward some proper talent that will get better over time, can't say I'm too sure about them doing the same...

Not too long ago people on this very forum were rubbishing our domestic league and the quality of players (or lack thereof).

The talent exists, it's just a matter of getting the right combination.

Well and truly our session. If Bavuma can also get his ton and Philander and Maharaj score quick runs, we could be over 300 ahead by stumps

Abbott to Warner, OUT, The plan to tuck Warner up has worked. Played onto the leg stump. Coach Lehmann has his hands on his head. Back of a length and on the leg stump, Warner leaps and looks to glance it fine on the leg side. The ball takes the hip, ricochets off the elbow and the ball gets flipped off

DA Warner b Abbott 45 (78b 4x4 0x6) SR: 57.69

I think that De Kock shouldn't come in at no.7 anymore now that we have seen that he is capable of big scores whilst also being consistent. He should bat at no.5 or no.6 to give him more time to score runs. Otherwise he'll often be running out of batting partners to stick around and score with him.

I've been seriously impressed with Bavuma - lad looks like a good old fashion test player. No glitz or glamour but solid technique and put away the bad ball whilst having a good temperament to bat time.

De Kock will natural move up the order when Amla and ABD retire.

+1 Solid technique and his head is perfectly still, plays the ball late under his eyes.

Yip.
Started shining before U/19 level. Only a matter of time before he made the step up.

Agreed. Son says he's a natural with exceptional cricket temperament, even at school (they were in same class, son was wkeeper). Hope he keeps his cool and form.

I think he's fine in the Gilly position...

Yeah, batting in top 6 and keeping is not going to be the wisest option in test matches....

QDK is now the best WK/batter in the world. We are lucky......

what do we make of day 3? who won the day?

I feel like we could still finish this game before batting again. hopefully we can bowl them out.

maybe in the morning, wiht the cooler air there will be a bit more swing and the real swing kings can come out an play.

if wickets start to fall in the morning we can have the game wrapped up before lunch.

thoughts?

I think we won the first session and they came back strongly after Lunch to make it even for the day.

But yeah, we can wrap this up quickly with accurate and patient bowling

Why was Vern worked up towards the end of the session? Like a toy pom at the garden gate :p

Decent fightback from Australia...if they want to win though, they'll need to put the foot down which will give us opportunities (if our bowlers handle the pressure).

I highly doubt the game will be finished before lunch. I think we will have to chase down a target below 100 to take victory...
