I saw a headline today, that Steyn is out for the Australian tour. Sports websites blocked at work.

Is this true ?

I don't understand why they can't give de Kock a chance ?

They might give him a chance in the no 7 or six batting slot.

As far as I know he is only resting for the next three to four weeks and should be fine for the Aussie incoming tour.

Fast bowler Dale Steyn will undergo rehabilitation on a fractured rib but will be fit for the home series against Australia which begins next month, Cricket South Africa (CSA) said on Tuesday.

Steyn was injured two weeks ago while fielding in the second test against India but played on to take nine wickets as South Africa claimed a series win with a 10-wicket victory.

"Dale dived while fielding a ball on day one of the second test against India in Durban and complained of slight pain of his right anterior chest region," Proteas team manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee said in a CSA statement.

"He continued playing and bowling with mild discomfort for the rest of the test. When the discomfort persisted after the match, a scan was performed which detected a small undisplaced fracture to his right eighth rib.

Hiding his head in shame!!

The only time it is likely to pop up again is if SA is getting beaten...

Yip, AUS smashed us 5 - 0, congrats to them.

SA vs AUS will end up being a draw.

Edit: Happy new year Chaps

I can not wait for this series to start.

i am looking forward to seeing who they proceed with in JK's place.

I am thinking Parnell (to be groomed) as he is left handed and he has shown some promise with the bat and he is also young.

Or

McLaren (best in the ODI arena all rounder wise) as he can dry up the runs from one side and he has really shown that he is willing to take a couple on the chin if need be to grind out some runs.

The wild card would be QdK to take over the gloves from AB (and slot in at 7) if AB's hand surgery has not healed 100% by the time the test starts.

Parnell would be an error. Infact, the greatest mistake we can make is "replacing" Kallis. I would go with an extra batsman.

I agree on Parnell.

Which batsman though?

I still think that Albie Morkel might get a call up at some stage (in ODI /T20 formats) .
He is no Kallis but you cannot ignore his performance as a Hired Gun.

Which batsman? Roussouw? Elgar? QdK (to lessen AB's work load)? And would you go for a no 5-7 batsman or is there someone you think could slot in in the top four?

I would not tamper with the top four atm (Smith, Alviro, Amla and AB), my only worry is that AB coming in at 4 could be a little tough with him keeping etc etc. I wonder if they won't move Faf to the no 4 slot.

I agree on Parnell.

Which batsman though?

there are a couple of guys in the local formats that have done ok, but there is no single extremely talented bat kicking down the test team's door, imo.

In the ODI format I agree that we might not have seen the last of Albie just yet. He has performed well in the T20s as a hired gun. anyone know if he played one dayers? Perhaps for the Titans in the last couple of months? And how did he do?

the top 6 selects itself.

Smith
Petersen
Amla
Faf
Ab
JP

you then have 8-11 looking like this
Robbie P
Philander
Steyn
Morkel

The number 7 slot should ideally be rotated based on conditions and opponent.

In SA for example, our 3 prong fast bowling attack with Robbie P as the spinner will be enough to win you matches without over burdening the team. In this scenario, an extra batsman, gives us supreme depth in batting.

however,

Should we go to India, our bowler workloads will increase and we are more likely to stay on the field longer, in this instance, I would select an extra seamer/ spinner to share the burden and ask the Top 6 to make sure we get runs on the board.

Albie has shown that he can't handle the big matches.
He does well in the IPL and then sucks for us.

Not that I don't personally like him as a player, I've just seen him fail too many times.

Vernon and Robbie are more than handy with the bat. I would go with Mclaren for an extra bowling option, since we no longer have that extra bowling option with Kallis gone. We've shown this year that we can manage without his batting when he was out of form. And he can bat too.

I would pick Chris Morris instead of McLaren

Either or, both would be fine. But I think that we need an extra bowling option more than an extra batsman, especially when things aren't going well for the main bowlers, we need someone who can bowl while the main bowlers rest. It's worked well for us so far.

Well, since the Australians boost a much much beter bowling attack than the Indians, i would rather replace Kallis with another batsman. Regarding Robbie P and Tahir, i would go for an all-out pace attack. Duminy can cover spin and Van Zyl can also bowl medium pace, We have much more dangerous pace bowlers than these mediocre spinners of ours. I still don’t think Faf belongs here, but time will tell.
My team would look like this.

1.Smith
2.Alviro (also on thin ice)
3.Amla
4.S.Van Zyl
5.AB
6.Duminey
7.Rossouw
8.C.Morris
9.V.Philander
10.D.Steyn
11.M.Morkel

I would also consider Abbot, Marchant De Lange or Beuran Hendricks instead of Morris, But Morris knows how to bat as well.

We tried that in Brisbane - go with an all pace attack with Duminy bowling spin. Duminy got injured and we were stuffed, we were lucky to get away with a draw there.
