South Africa wants to confront online retailers allegedly exploiting tariff loopholes

So they're going to charge VAT and import duties like they do now? Great to know.

People never see the bigger picture.

The online retailers sells stuff much cheaper and floods the markets, thus destroy the local industry that shuts down, costing hundreds of thousands of jobs. Competition we say.

Then once the local market is destroy they hike up the prices, so we have to buy the junk at 5-10x the price because no one local makes it anymore.

But then we have say 100 000 people more on social wellfare, and how to deal with that? Raise and raise taxes.

So eventually you will just have to pay more tax to cover for buying stuff cheaper once.

Sad reality.
The local guys also import it and sell it with a huge markup. We have no local industry that creates value. Our manufacturing died with apartheid and if you get something locally produced it's crap that can't even be exported.

Imagine using words like marginally but still abusing u and thru. Unless you're a 13 year old girl, use full words like a grown up.

I would imagine the majority of "South Africa" really doesn't want to.

And yet SARS is collecting those duties from Temu and SHEIN.

Amazing that the honorable minister can’t take 5 minutes to call sars and ask.

This is about skipping BEE, and retailers lining the pockets of the ministers to kill competition.
He did, he is number 178569 in the line, his call be answered by the next available operator.

You should seek medical attention for that stroke you're clearly having. I'm not sure anyone's reading your posts so much as translating them into English from whatever language that is.

Temu and Shein crackdown in South Africa

Trade, industry, and competition minister Ebrahim Patel says the South African government wants to confront international online retailers accused of exploiting tariff loopholes to undermine local stores.

According to a Sunday Times report, the minister believes that one of the biggest import-related challenges for local retailers is getting to grips with the dominance of Temu and Shein.
There is noth

There is nothing wrong with us buying things on temu customs get their cut and we use money that we grinded for. Isnt this what brics wish for all of us?cant i pay R2 a bread. Damn It will be expired

Looks like Takelot doesn't like competition. Their merchant fees are too high and too many layers of middlemen between the manufacturer and consumer. It's darn near impossible to compete with the Chinese.

The high rate of crime in SA means you need to pay insurance and pay for security at your warehouse. Temu, Shein and Banggood bring in items directly so the items spend a minimal time in local storage and so their costs are lower. The cost of doing business in a high crime, highly corrupt country are high.

100% spot on. Takealot does sell some South African products eg food products but Temu doesn't sell food. There probably are some clothing and cosmetic products we make here, like Rooibos soaps and creams but gadgets are mostly Chinese and for the remainder of the mostly it's some other foreign country. They have to sell at mark up because they need to pay their cut of corporate tax to SARS, they need to hire employees, and they need to pay for insurance/security for storage and transport. All of that adds up in high crime societies.

So what local industry produces USB cables, screen protectors, gardening tool replacement parts, USB lights and so on?

Then once the local market is destroy they hike up the prices, so we have to buy the junk at 5-10x the price because no one local makes it anymore.

Hike up prices? If they hike up prices, people will stop buying from them. Somehow in 20 years+ of cheap Chinese stuff, it still remains relatively cheap. If Temu become too expensive people will buy from someone else, eg Bob (many Chinese sellers there), or AliExpress, or Banggood, or Amazon, or Ebay, or Loot or many others.

But then we have say 100 000 people more on social wellfare, and how to deal with that? Raise and raise taxes.

We have that anyway.

No. Spending less money at Temu allows you to spend more at SA eateries or buy other products. Gov charges 40% duty on clothes. And most local clothing retailers resell Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian and other made clothing. SA doesn't manufacture gadgets, electronics etc. There is no reason for middlemen to get a cut for items we can bring in ourselves.

Some things do need a middleman. For example if you buy a car, you want it serviced by someone who knows how to service it. Such things stay local. No issues with that. People who import cheap second hand Japanese cars pay huge tax bills.

Sad reality.

LOL

So should the commercial landlords also complain about takealot taking away from the brick n mortar retailers? They were quick to tell us about the "future of shopping" back then, now they have been outplayed.

We pay way more on tax and SARS is coining it with temu.

If temu says an item for R300 is 90% off and the price is R30, I should pay customs on the R30. But instead I pay tax on the R300 so my tax for just that one item is R45. Basically tax for me is 150% of what I paid.

Same with if I use a voucher. Same with free items. Customs calculation which Buffalo hides seem to be totally separate to what we actually pay. Calculation is based on price before discount, before voucher, before free item and before price adjustment. Result is we get screwed over. only thing positive is we get screwed over so badly by dropshippers who have taken over takealot and by retailers who sell Chinese crap, that we see a very flawed limited stock Chinese shop who does free delivery, as a Godsend. This just shows how we have been screwed over locally.

Title of article should read SA Customs screw over price sensitive consumers with unfair incorrect calculated tax fees. Takealot complains it is still too low.

Exactly. This temu market entry was negotiated for long ago at the Muppet summit
Gubmint is coining it way more than some few dipshit dropshippers can manage. Think 10s of thousands of orders daily 100 to 150 avg taxes per order. COIN!

High yes, maybe double, not 5x 10x sometimes 20x , their puss... Finally their chickens come home to roost

Competition only works well when the playing field is level. If the Chinese shops are circumventing some of the tariffs then it's no longer proper competition
