South Africa wants to confront online retailers allegedly exploiting tariff loopholes

The high rate of crime in SA means you need to pay insurance and pay for security at your warehouse. Temu, Shein and Banggood bring in items directly so the items spend a minimal time in local storage and so their costs are lower. The cost of doing business in a high crime, highly corrupt country are high.
So customs and vat=5-10x markups?
Yeah fuk them all they been stealing our money for years. Hope they all go bankrupt.

Temu vs take a snot below ,the Exploitative practices are clear when i report it to takealot 0 action happens. ANC already stealing our monies I won't allow some greedy dropshipper KLONT to do it also
FUK DEM ALL!
VIVA CCP!

You can't compare limited "Flash price" specials with normal pricing. My understanding is that the Temu price also doesn't include VAT, duties and other taxes, which would also result in increases.

People should also be careful about taking Temu's current pricing as final pricing, as my understanding is that it's sinking billions of US$ to build market share. If this is correct then once it decides that it now needs to make a profit, pricing might not be as attractive as it currently is. It'll likely still be cheaper than Takealot (just based on volumes of scale) but the difference won't be what people are currently seeing

Then Temu v 2 shows up and Temu v1 turns into takealot.

We know how their pricing works, we have fanboi threads and we are taking full advantage.

Ride the wave, till it ends, then take a breather, and ride the next wave

Not sure what the fuzz is about, I pay my avarage of 12-18% customs duty, I order twice I week avarageing R8000 per order. Funny thing is that the same products are sometimes being sold on local platforms with a 1000% markup. Takealot and Co, bring down your prices, then your customers will buy from you.

The Chinese are dumping their goods and it is harmful to the economy that we have left, the little that there is. Dont confront minister, do your job and shut them down or would that not be in the ANCs interest rather than the country's!

Temu inventory is extremely limited and limited to small stuff due to flight and delivery costs. The exact same small cheap breakable crap temy is selling are dumped and sold by dropshippers at 10X the price. This exposes takealot as a scam bidorbuy clone. Now takealot and dropshippers are complaining to everyone who wants to listen.

Surely it is those Pakistani stores who should be complaining. There are at least 6 in my local mall. The fact that there are 6 stores selling Chinese crap in my local mall should show you that we are already flooded with Chinese goods before Temu. Our money is just not sent to a Pakistani or Bangladeshi's workers home in their country but now goes direct to China but at 5 to 10 times less. Customs are scoring way more in taxes consumers are paying directly.

This costing jobs excuse when SA NOT PRODUCE THE SAME CRAP small trinkets is BS. SA is a country of middlemen. From government who are not competent, to BEE laws that have the biggest component being middlemen companies that claim to be BEE but are just middlemen who add zero value to the chain.

Middleman thinking makes us less competitive and lazy. Make 1 sale a month as a middleman company or spend 9 to 5 daily working your arse off. SA has chosen the former way before Temu resulting in the highest unemployment in the world. Now Temu comes and some middleman dropshippers and scam Takealot are complaining.

Anyway you don't want to listen. Let me do what you sound like

Theys took our jobs!

He's talking about engagement..clickbaity is a word. It means "creating" a sensationalistic headline to create engagement which would otherwise not be there. First time on the internet??

Firstly, Takealot has been ripping SA consumers for years....
Temu clearly states that VAT and Import duty are not included in their pricing but link a very efficient payment system to cater for this which is relaid to the purchaser as soon as the goods hit JHB Airport customs. There are no SA companies/ factories that produce equivalent goods- only
re-sellers. I recently tested their offering by purchasing a uniquely designed leisure shirt which cost me R280 inc delivery, vat and import duty...lo and behold a week later a company from Cape Town advertising themselves as an upmarket clothing store were advertising the same unique design for R800 plus delivery of R150.00
SA consumers are being ripped left right and centre and Temu is breath of fresh air.

We pay way more on tax and SARS is coining it with temu.

If temu says an item for R300 is 90% off and the price is R30, I should pay customs on the R30. But instead I pay tax on the R300 so my tax for just that one item is R45. Basically tax for me is 150% of what I paid.

Same with if I use a voucher. Same with free items. Customs calculation which Buffalo hides seem to be totally separate to what we actually pay. Calculation is based on price before discount, before voucher, before free item and before price adjustment. Result is we get screwed over. only thing positive is we get screwed over so badly by dropshippers who have taken over takealot and by retailers who sell Chinese crap, that we see a very flawed limited stock Chinese shop who does free delivery, as a Godsend. This just shows how we have been screwed over locally.

Title of article should read SA Customs screw over price sensitive consumers with unfair incorrect calculated tax fees. Takealot complains it is still too low.
I don't know where you're getting that info from but Buffalo only charges you duties on the invoice amount which is the way it's always been with customs.

That's a lot of stuff, I’m assuming you are reselling those goods, it’s not for personal use?!

That's why we can't have nice things in SA. Always someone that need to fck it up for everyone else.

These guys "Takealot" basically are shooting themselves and their customers in the foot here. Many of these items listed on their website is from Temu and the people that put it there probably got the "Discounted" Tax price.

This is only going to cause people to have to pay more for everything, and everyone will be losing end of the day.

"He added that Takealot was engaging with governmental and non-governmental institutions to address the issue". Takealot really snitched!

Lol, we've bought a bunch of stuff from Temu already, I think I've ordered twice from TAL since the beginning of 2023.

Take Temu/Shein away, it's not like people will go running to TAL to get their online shopping fix as they have with Temu/Shein.
