South Africa wants to make alcohol more expensive

Hello darkness my old friend…

Raising taxes which manufacturers mainly pay would be great. We would see more pakistani "alternatives" flooding the market (thinking here of the fake coca cola, fake simba, fake disprin, distilled water actually coming from a toilets bottom bowl) and this will affect non other than the poor which ironically the billionaire politicians are stealing from and using the poor as an excuse when they do it. epah would jump first and say screw the poor, but screwing the poor just results in more of them being born

It will also not reduce the deaths, if you search Pienaar on X you get footage of the latest shooting at a shebeen, those who survived were taken to hospital. Taxi drivers on Christmas and New Years are all drunk while transporting people and they are also a burden on the healthcare system. And then at the same time government implement NHI, lols

South Africa wants to make alcohol more expensive

Natioanl Treasury proposes raising excise taxes to tackle excessive drinking, with success in this tactic seen in England and Canada.
It's like this lot never learn.

We're a country of people who will make a plan to get a dop... So if legit alcohol gets more expensive, the illicit and homemade stuff will just get a bigger market share.

My solution has always been that you can only buy booze if you are in the 36% marginal tax bracket or above. That way, the poor can focus on upskilling instead of drinking, and drunkards at least have an income to pay for any damage they cause.

Another solution is that Lesotho fills the pipe that brings water to Gauteng with Maluti instead, and then when we're all nicely drunk, Letsie III takes over. Cape Town and Durban won't be able to win against Lesotho if Joburg is drunk.
