South Africa will have to destroy 2 million J&J COVID-19 vaccines

South Africa's Covid-19 vaccination programme could be dealt a big blow as two million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine will likely be destroyed.

The vaccines have been waiting in limbo at an Aspen distribution plant in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) after it was discovered that a batch of the J&J vaccines manufactured at the Emergent BioSolutions plant in Baltimore had been contaminated.

A ruling from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday declared that a months-long probe into operations at the factory found safety protocols were not strictly adhered to.

So this had been a known possible outcome since mid April but I assume our government didn't bother with a contingency plan.

What contigency plan would you suggest they have made?
Perhaps negotiating with Moderna would have been a good start.
Or negotiating with the various other vaccine manufacturers to make up for a possible shortfall .
SA still hasn't have enough vaccines for our population , so ordering more would be a win-win anyway.

But you are right, government doing absolutely nothing and not planning is great and should be defended

Moderna said no to Africa until at least 2022
Without going Russian or Chinese there is not many other options.
Moderna and Pfizer have a very low temp cold chain challenges and are 2 doses.
AstraZenca is known to be useless on the variant prevalent in South Africa

J&J is a single dose vaccine with normal freezing cold chain is very easy to transport and store. Single dose makes management many folds easier to manage. There is a lot of reasons to make J&J work. It is also a fraction of the cost of Pfizer or Moderna especially with the transport costs factored in. Therefore the delay makes sense

C'mon guys, let's tone down the click-bait just a few notches.
"Two million doses that are affected but currently in the store warehouse in Gqeberha, so obviously we can't ignore the fact that it takes our vaccine to roll out a bit backwards".

now let me get this straight, according to this report, AFTER the FDA declared 60 million jabs as being contaminated and thus not fit for human 'consumption', and taking into account that 2 million of these jabs are in PE, we have a situation where there is a possibility the SA regulator can turn this verdict around by 'further assessing them' - what utter nonsense!
"In a statement the health department initially said that the vaccines would undergo further assessment by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) to determine if they were suitable for use in South Africa."

So, you will take a possibly contaminated vaccine? What about a drug that is known to work but also lacks regulator approval?

I'll take anything, gimme all of it. I'll even take covid.

So how is the factory going to destroy the vaccines? Pour them down the nearest storm water drainor into the sewer?
