South African bank employee arrested for loading fake notes into ATM

So it DOES happen....
Farking banks deny it... happened to me twice... got fake notes from an ATM

Firstly, how does he manage to steal R2m before they catch him? And secondly, usually it's not bank employees that stock these atm's, but companies like Coin etc. Unless it was an ATM in front of a branch maybe? That would be really dumb...

I'm sure there's a lot more to this.

The bank and cops have probably been tracking a counterfeiting syndicate for months, building up a picture of who exactly is involved, who has dealings with banks, what their MO is, etc, etc.

Arresting an employee at the ATM is only a tiny part of the operation.

I also don't think will hear much more detail. Neither the banks nor the cops want to let on how much they know about how these syndicates operate. Also, it's quite possible that there's an international component to this.

We were handed several fake notes by a Standard Bank teller in a withdrawal of R12,000.

Hang on,
What SHOULD you do if you get fake notes from a ATM?
Handing it in to the tellers might get you looks,
Never happened to me, so wouldn't know what to do;

I'd immediately phone the bank's fraud dept and insist they get someone out immediately. If there was any hesitation or delay I'd also call the cops.

Yeah, get them out there to check for more counterfeit notes

I once deposited notes which was shredded by an ATM... no need to say more, at least the bank replaced the ATM. I will rather take Monopoly money (in the case that I earned it) than no money. I also don't believe anything that a bank tells me anymore.

Bank will probably blame you.

The last time that I experienced an error made by the bank, they told me it is a system error and that they could only take responsibility over a human error??? Friendly I asked them who designed the system. I didn't ask anything else, but then wrote them a letter and explicitly asked them to reply to me in writing (or in email), customer service phone me, and again told me system error this and that. URGH! I closed that account.

Banks never accept responsibility.

Yip that happened to me as well;

Did manage to swap notes and redeposit,

But seriously though, do you have any recouse if you get fake notes, or even stained notes?

Whaaat?!!! You guys don't trust your banks???

Jeepers, man. If that's the case, how can you bear to have your hard-earned moolah in their hands?? I don't understand. I absolutely trust my bankers.
