So that's part of the socialists' view?
(Never read Orwell, just saw a movie, long ago. Think it was called "Brazil" - brilliant!)

well, socialists and state-capitalists both tend to have the idea of social engineering at their core :). they differ in who should be allowed to do it, is all. and oddly, they always think there's some other group of people who need to be engineered for their own good.

Orwell was an oddity: a socialist-sympathiser who thought socialists tended to suck. these days he'd be an anarchist, in that he deeply mistrusted centralized power. when he volunteered to fight in the Spanish Civil War, he fought with the anarchist sides.

No an appeal will suspend the current judgement, which they have until next week Tuesday to lodge before the 14 days runs out from what I can tell.

yes. an appeal renders it moot until the appeal is resolved. like it never happened. they'll just wait until the 16th (i think) and then lodge the appeal.

Judging by the booze queues, it seems like there are rumors that booze is going to be **** down?

could be. i'll double check, but i think that while it's suspended (the ruling) the normal powers apply. so iirc they can summarily change as they say circumstances require. hence all the warnings when they moved to 3 that "you better be good or we'll take it away".

just on this, the actual Act section 27(i) specifically empowers them to order "the suspension or limiting of the sale. dispensing or transportation of alcoholic beverages", so that's not open to much wiggle-room. the rationality test probably applies more easily to the 100 new ideas that fall under section 27(n) "other steps that may be necessary". these would probably have to be justified independently.

not sure if that means the ban on alcohol is explicitly empowered by the act and therefore not required to be independently justified, and - if yes - whether they could therefore just introduce it or remove it willy-nilly.

Yep, discussed a few pages back and still going into the legalities. The rumour is we're going back to level 4 on Thurs. No proof has been found.

Did my usually productive search of news24, nothing published there. And they often claim to have access to "leaks".

yes. however, following the Islamic proverb that says "trust in Allah, but tether your camel anyway", i'll probably lay some supplies in :)

Is it the get-you-news-from-whatsapp time again?

no, i got it from a few people in the industry. they said they've been told to prepare for shutting down sales again. one guy was very specific and said "Thursday" but i haven't been able to get independent corroboration. hence asking here.

could be. however, they work in high-end liquor retail and distribution. they weren't pleased about it. they've just had a small window to save their business and are pretty ****ed off.

And Hamish saw reaction as well.

Wouldn't put it past the NCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC to start the rumour either.

Oh, probably to get people to panic so they buy more alcohol.

I'm guessing you're trolling, but ok. knowing them, these guys are too busy trying to prevent their life's work going under to have time to plan and strategize to manipulate the markets :)

edit: anyway. no one seems to have corroboration on this, so i know what i'm doing tomorrow. whatever happens, it won't go to waste.

Not trolling. Alcohol business is a sneaky business build on crippled families and ruined life's.

you should definitely write to Ardbeg, Buffalo Trace, Laphroaig, and the others to tell them :). i don't think they know this view.

(though, in all seriousness, if you're going to write, definitely write to Diageo. i'll back you in that. they're swine. edit: ask them why they price the annual Classics the way they do and why the quality has been steadily decreasing at the same time. edit: also Remy, though give them a break on how they handled the Bruichladdich acquisition so far.)

An old saying, never believe something until it has been officially denied:
