Go on Alibaba.com and in the first row of results for "latex household gloves" I found 5000 pairs for $170.-

That's R2,853.- (excluding shipping which would be a couple thousand extra).

And we spent R411,996.- ???????????????????????

The Oranjezicht market (which is actually at the V&A waterfront) opened up on the 1st of June, although they are only open on Saturday (usually open on Sat + Sun). Been there twice since then. Very good and you can eat outside.

Looked a bit more closely. For the first purchase of 8 pairs of household gloves, Masiqhame Trading 1057 were charging R9.89 per pair(a fair price). Then the price suddenly shot up to R72.63!

The WC department of education alone spent at least R774,483 on 9600 pairs of gloves. That's at least around a R740,000 mark-up on actual procurement costs.

I'm so pissed off right now...

It's called outsourcing or subcontracting. The difference between the selling price and the actual cost is your pocket money.

Yeah, doubling the price I can still fathom, but this is just retarded... And who OK'd this? What market research went into this? Obviously none. This just makes me so mad... the department of education paid a 740,000 rand markup on a 27,000 rand purchase! We could have gotten 13 times more PPE for half the price!

Just looked up price of surgical /examination /latex gloves my company pays direct from supplier. We are a food manufacturer and use them for workers (food handlers). Depending on quality, they range between R 2.90-6.20 per pair.

They list them as " Gloves(Latex, yellow, household, one-size-fits-all, waterproof)"

So these are not sterile surgical gloves or even medical grade gloves, these are standard yellow household gloves, ie kitchen gloves... Same as these I'm sure: https://www.cashbuildonline.co.za/products/latex-protective-household-gloves

I have always believed the DA to be the better party by a country mile, but they really need to defend/explain these inflated prices(if found to be) - makes my blood boil to see such blatant opportunism - bit it takes both parties to complete the transaction.

Masiqhame Trading 1057 - definitely did very well from this pandemic, the variability in pricing for the same item from the same vendor is concerning. Also, with the volume ordered, one would have expected much better pricing imo. They are based in Edgemead and have been doing business with the city for a number of years.
