“I can also say that we have actually secured enough doses to vaccinate all the people who will need to be vaccinated in South Africa.”

The above phrase is the dangerous one.
It means our government will decide how many need to be vaccinated and when they will just out of the blue decide to stop vaccinating people.
It also means they will decide what levels mean herd immunity has been reached whenever it suits them.

It means nothing they say or proclaim is worth anything at all.

That may be true to some extent, but you have excluded the private sector which will make significant contribution in moving towards critical mass

There was an interview with Discovery Health today that basically excludes the private sector from securing their own vaccines and stated that they will help pay for the program but source the vaccines from govt. That implies the private sector will only be able to get involved AFTER the govt pulls back.

Interesting.
Govt shoots itself in the foot again!

Stop being obtuse.
But, as with being a bit of an arsehole, I do it so well.

As has been pointed out, I'll wait for 2023 to make sense of this excess deaths mythology. Thanks guys. You made it seem like I'm a dick, when the very sources you quote make it as clear as mud.

J&J insisting on us using all 80K vaccines before shipping the next batch is interesting, after the AstraZeneca debacle there's obviously very little trust in our government

It's probably just a supply/demand thing. They can't have supplies sent somewhere where they just sit in storage when demand is high all over the globe. They probably have a similar condition in place for everyone they are supplying.

I think the first half a mil are being administered as part of "test study", so not paid for. I think. They have promised to buy 9m doses after these studies however.

Of course uncertainty still exists with regard to whether a centralised model of distribution will be pursued - whereby our government leads on procurement and coordinates distribution - or whether there will be more active involvement of the private sector in some, or all, of these elements of the programme.

Either way, we have made sure our DHMS members will be covered and protected. We have been engaging directly with several of the key vaccine manufacturers since Q3 2020 and remain in active contact with them. Should their position of selling only to governments change in the near future, we will rapidly engage with the NDoH to agree on a role for Discovery and other private sector players to become directly involved in procurement and distribution.
While the detail of the rollout is yet to be confirmed, we are optimistic that the priority groups identified for early vaccination will receive their vaccines during the first half of 2021.

Johnson & Johnson has only a few million COVID-19 vaccine doses in stock as likely launch nears

Johnson & Johnson has only a few million doses of its experimental COVID-19 vaccine in its inventory even as likely U.S. regulatory authorization is only a few weeks away, White House officials said on Wednesday.

J&J remains committed to providing 100 million doses by June but deliveries are likely to be "back-end loaded" as J&J works with the U.S. government to boost supply, Jeffrey Zients, the White House's COVID-19 response coordinator, said during a press call.

“Across the last few weeks we've learned that there is not a big inventory of Johnson and Johnson. There's a few million doses that we’ll start with," Zients said.

J&J said in a statement it intends to immediately begin distributing doses upon U.S. authorization and expects to supply 100 million doses to the United States in the first half of 2021.

Anyone with a needle in his hands is a torturer.
Agreed! Reminds me of the very first time I had to give an injection:

Approached patient and informed him that I was about to give him his IMI, and would he mind being my first. He agrees and I plunge the needle into his buttocks, releasing the syringe contents a tad too quickly - patient freezes up and I take two steps back so that he couldn't retaliate! Poor chap was in traction so he couldn't get at me.

Fortunately all was soon forgiven.

Just wait till they roll out the vaccines
If you think that is going to be bad, just stick around till people start driving cars, lambchop.

I presume you will not drive or travel in one?

Geoff called me earlier.
He needs a lumbar puncture to be carried out, and specifically requested you do it.
