I agree with @MiW - the private sector will at least ensure a smooth roll-out for those of us who have it. It (thankfully) won't be a pure government-run operation.

Is the private sector allowed to? I noticed Mkhize's comments didn't include anything about it, or am i missing something?

His comments were interesting, and would put us possibly before many other African countries, but alas we'll have to wait to actually taste the pudding before we can say if its good.

I think there was a time when the private sector thought the government had the vaccine procurement under control. As a result I doubt that any medical aid societies have contracts / orders in place (not sure that was even possible).

Demand for the vaccines currently outstrips supply. No matter how much cash medical aid societies have the short- and medium-term manufacturing constraints won’t make more vaccines available. i.e. as a result of the government missing that early window medical aid society members are in the same boat as the rest of the public.

The remaining people were meant to be the private citizens and their family who had the disposable income and could afford to privately pay for the vaccine themselves, aka the income tax payers. Just like how everything else the government was supposed to provide is often outsourced to the private sector to deal with. Meanwhile, you're going to see the political elite and their connected friends and family are suddenly considered as health care workers, busy nursing the health of their tenders.

Yup. Watched and listened to the entire special broadcast of this grand vaccine plan, with all their fancy slides and management doublespeak cr@p. Change the title of the slides and it just as easily been the same damn slides posted over the years about so many grand ANC plans!

Pillay tries to hide behind confidentiality agreements apparently signed with "all" the major vaccine potential suppliers, and claims that the procurement process will have to comply with the CFMA!

This reads to me " we have yet to determine where and how the corruption rip-offs can be implemented.

Late last month we had to listen to a bunch of experts telling us that a "herd immunity" strategy will never work. Tonight we hear that the govt not only accepts the concept of herd immunity BUT that this has driven their establishment of the number of people they "plan" to vaccinate!

That already is a startling statement! What about the rest? are they just "collateral damage"?
What government can possibly justify telling its population that their target is only 67% of you to get vaccinated? It should be 100%!

Then you start adding up the numbers in that slide posted by @Dave,
and you get:

Phase 1: 01 250 000
Phase 2: 16 600 000
Phase 3: 22 500 000

Total: 40 350 000

The balance are just canon fodder?

The ONLY hope we have in this country is a private-sector venture aided by the opposition and some very generous donations to help those that are going to have to sit and wait for the useless government system to get going.

Ja! We get our knickers in a knot when positive tests per day reach 14 000 and already at hugely lower figures, the system is in a mess! The 20 million are just doomed! How do they think the population should feel after this BS presentation tonight?

I think the balance are children and teenagers. The figure sounds about right if so. People less than 18 years old. Other countries are not vaccinating this age group due to it not being tested on kids or necessary. Not sure exact reason.
