Hey everyone,

been following this thready every single day and reading every single comment, as a millennial with 0 experience or understanding w.r.t a "National Shutdown", what would that mean for our country? Like what does it mean in the simplest terms?
Will we be allowed to go outside, for example, or does it mean nobody goes anywhere?

I did try and Google but only getting like news stories regarding lockdown, but not really a proper explanation.

Apologies if already asked, please no hate just here to learn :)

It means you can only go to the doctor or to get food (grocery store). You can move around in your yard. Supply chains must continue (in other words those who need to supply stock for food).

But this will be very difficult to control in a developing country with poor police and military and people that have no respect for the law.

This is how I understand it.

Actually the whole virus works in your collective favour and means that some day fairly soon you may be able to easily afford property.

A national shutdown would entail the following:
  • Prohibiting all local travel between provinces
  • Installing curfews on when people may be allowed out in public spaces
  • All nonessential businesses closed
  • All essential businesses remain open provided that there are hygiene precautions taken
  • Borders are closed
  • Ports may remain open to essential imports
  • Flights from other countries banned except for returning citizens
  • Other essential laws and regulations by government to support the economy
Realistically, by declaring a State of Emergency, the president can do all of this immediately. But it requires a sitting of parliament to agree to the declaration, as is required by our constitution.

The business of Parliament has been suspended for now, but could be called in an emergency session to accept the declaration.

Will we be allowed to go outside, for example, or does it mean nobody goes anywhere?

You will still be allowed to leave the house to buy supplies, food (from takeaway restaurants!), visit your doctor, go to the pharmacy, buy fuel, etc. In Italy and Spain before their national lockdowns provision was made for people leaving the house to exercise as well.

All nonessential travel would be prohibited. You might be able to go walkabouts if you have good reason.

The whole national shutdown business has me worried... I'm stuck in Jozi till Wednesday, and plan on flying back to CPT that evening... That the situation holds until then

Someone in Scottburgh has it too now. His wife works at a school there. Not sure if the details but you will quickly find it on Google.

You getting your stories crossed, this guy is from Ramsgate. There was a suspected case during the week in Scottburgh with a parent of a student the results for the test was expected on Friday. I haven't heard anything since so I'm assuming it's negative

True true. Some confusion about Scottburgh. Not sure where it came from. Several people were adamant he was from Scottburgh.

Maybe from but clearly not living there now at the moment. See this is how mafia shoot ups got started

Informal settlements will be our downfall. Huge population density with very little hygiene. Once the virus starts spreading there, it'll run like wildfire and public hospitals will be overwhelmed.

It won't be the residents' fault, it just is what it is.

Can't you drive down if flights are cancelled?

I would prefer to do that anyway.
