That is most likely accurate. They're probably thousands who are sick who are just dealing with it like they would deal with a bout of the flu.
Likely on the right track, but wouldn't use the word accurate.
It's impossible for us to get real figures, especially in Safrika

Because of what is going on around the world? The way that government and various other private sector response has been? I'm not saying there's a Utopian response going on - but I would be extremely surprised and concerned if they weren't testing respiratory-related deaths at this stage.
So, we can only test a handful of people presenting with symptoms in SA (because - cost of test, limited funds, etc) and we must allocate a percentage of those resources to testing dead people?
Ok. I for one vote for the living and looking after them.

Also, I haven't seen anything from the rest of the world that they are focusing on testing the dead.

Waste of resources on testing dead people for COVID-19... why test them?

The risk of infection may be there, so just cremate them?

Right. But surely we need to focus extremely limited resources on the living?

So if you hypothetically get 20 people die from respiratory ailments in an area where testing has shown no cases that does not help the living in the area in terms of targeted education etc? We have far more healthy people clogging the system than dead people I assure you.

So since staying home is not the cure but only an extension to getting it later on ( vaccine 12-18 months away)
Why are everybody thinking they will not get it again in 4 weeks time after everybody pitches at work and school again?

yes yes health care imploding.. so we are going to go into isolation for a month every 4 months?
OR are we hoping it dies and only comes back after the vaccine has been made?
Dont hold your breath waiting for the vaccine. More likely we will get better treatments, but based on how viruses work.... a vaccine is unlikely to be our savior.

This burns out when we have herd immunity. Our health minister has indicated that is around 70% (70% of the population need to be infected) before this starts dying down. Thats 36 million+ South Africans. We are currently at 402. So we have a long way to go before there is any kinda normalization of life.

I really feel for the people in healthcare. They going to be dealing with a lot of sick and dead people.

So, do we allocate the limited resources on testing the dead or the living?
And don't hedge your bet with some soft cock both bs. We can't afford that.
And please provide sauce of this testing regime you are adamant about.

I'm no medical or epidemiology expert, but I would imagine that data on deaths of people who weren't previously confirmed COVID-19 positive but have died from respiratory related illnesses is quite important when it comes to tracking and keeping tabs on the spread of the virus?

That discounts how many of us may have already had it and not known and carried on.

"uninformed or think it's the flu, will pass me by attitude .." - seems the whole world first wants to walk in the Italians shoes , before taking this shitfest seriously.
But the ‘uninformed’ that think this is over because they have bought toilet paper and locked themselves into bu are just as stupid.
Looks like herd Immunity and heard mentality runs closely together.
In 3 weeks time you are still going to get it.
In 6 months time you are still going to get it.

these people really believe that locking yourself in with netflix for three weeks is going to solve the problem.

A vaccine is only on the cards in maybe 12 months.

Yet the CDC release guidelines for post mortem COVID19 testing and specimen handling in FEBRUARY.
Yeah, that doesn't in any way suggest that all people that die of respiratory ailments are being tested.

And more to the pint, this being the SA thread, the dead are being tested here?

If our Police Minister actually vectored his efforts to the actual combating of violent crime instead of scattering people who're still at the tavern after 6pm, we might actually free up some hospital beds/ventilators/etc!
