South African fibre veterans launch United States expansion plan

One of South Africa’s major fibre broadband industry players has partnered with a group of investors to make a move on the American market.

Myriad Capital is spearheading the push, with veterans like Afrihost co-founder Peter Meintjes and former Conduct Telecommunications shareholder and DFA sales head Dimitri Moussa involved.

There's enough competition there. They won't succeed offering the speeds you get here in the first world at SA-type pricing.

The US is really a totally different beast when it comes to fiber compared to South Africa for so many various reasons. While it's true that not every home has fiber available, the incumbents (AT&T, Comcast, Verizon, etc) all run FTTN/FTTC and already have fiber installed on practically every street in America. The cost of labor is so extremely high that they dont bother rolling out directly to homes since copper is fast enough for most people, but if threatened by a new competitor they'll react by rolling out FTTH faster and offering it faster and cheaper than any other competitor possibly can. There of course are a few opportunities in some undeserved communities where it is possible to roll out a brand new fiber network and make money, but those are far and few in between and difficult to scale up.

Why not roll out to the whole country, penetration has been low so far, take up also low considering the total number of home users signed to an ISP

Damn, I was at that chaps house recently. Really nice guy and family. Our children are/were in same class.

He was mentioning needing to possibly move to US. Amazing business he has built. Did not know and did not ask what he did, though we talked about solar and home automation a lot - didn't know he owned metrowatt too!!

Goes without saying I guess, they gonna be amazing in the US
