South African government allocates R2.5 billion for broadband network

If they wanted to emulate the Australian NBN setup, they're about R392bn short of the required number.. but since we're half the size of Australia we can halve the number, and then times it by 10 for corruption.

“There is still a shortfall in our funding, but we hope to start rolling out broadband as soon as possible,” said Cwele.

“We are sure additional money will come in as we start building.”

So what kind of shortfall are we talking about? R2.5 billion?

2.5bn ???

That is peanuts compared to what each telco currently spends annually on new network and network upgrades.

"The policy also states 90% of South Africans must have access to a 5Mbps connection by 2020, while 50% of citizens must connect at 100Mbps."

So 3 years left, such a joke, if the current "10 year late on our initial planned switch off date" for analogue switch off is anything to go by, then I am sure these milestones will be reached in 2036.

Why not rather take that R2.5 Billion and enable and incentivise private companies to make the reach?

I hope these funds will be used for the right purpose ie actually delivering on this initiative

...that will just disappear into oblivion, never to be heard of again.
