Nearly R1-billion new network to be built. The SAPS hopes that Tetra networks will cover the entire country by 2015.
The network will integrate Tetra and WiMax technology and will allow mobile video transmission, as well as police command and control and 10111 (police-only emergency phone number) dispatching.
The programme will start in April and take five years to complete. It will involve the installation of more than 200 base stations and some 10 000 terminals.
This network will be fully compatible with the next generation Tetra enhanced data service, thus ensuring an easy migration to this new wide band data service.

What exactly does it do though?
The UK have had this for years. It's a sophisticated secure radio network for emergency services. At the moment you can listen in to whatever is happening. With Tetra you would find it extremely difficult. They can also speak to individual people in privacy or a particular group.

Hmm... call me a buff old cynic, but in the 'war on crime' I think this gimmick will be about as much use as a chocolate watch. Just like those techno-pimped cop cars they just got. Someone, somewhere, is making a fortune doing this pointless stuff from corrupt contracts etc.

Let's hope they remember to properly train the people that are going to use it.

Chances are they are going to install this super-duper network and let the police loose on it. After a few days it will then be in the same shape as their fleet of vehicles, and the technology will be proclaimed a failure.

The BEE company who won the contract for installing this will however already be paid at that stage, and would also have in return settled the kickbacks with whoever was on the inside and helped them to get it.

Too little too late IMO. How is this going to stop corruption and crime?
This is 10 years too late IMO, not trying to be negative but 1 billion for a radio network that probably wont be used properly anyway ???? WTF?

waste of money!
whatever happened to the state of the art call centre which so spectacularly failed a while ago & they had to revert back to the old stuff. there were reports that most cars weren't fitted out 4 the new call centre and old ones wouldn't work.
so now they want to spend on some other white elephant?

Good idea will most probably fail on implementation. Wonder which ANC bra is getting kickbacks and how much?

The SAPS doesn't need stupid gadgets like Mr T's van. They need peroper training for the officers and more incentive to not be corrupt.

Super staff. The cops are killing the bloody robbers like flies. This gives a boost to the fight against crime in this country.

Six years to install a WiMax Network

Per province roughly 30-40 people go into the criminal intelligence division (per annum).. the remaining 1500 will require training as they have probably never heard of WiMax and will break/steal the equipment.
