Unreasonable expectations. The police don't fight crime. The only thing the police exist for is to provide case numbers so that you can lodge insurance claims.
For much of us yeah... Should just scale it back and let us register cases online for the number

Police can't distinguish between mafia, extortionists, government or BEE. The all are the same.

That is why even if a police unit has been set up to get rid of zama zama's, it is South Africans they give the gold to. That makes them legitimate. Police will never go after the big bosses.

Only high profile murders the police properly investigates. The rest is they are part of the problem of a corrupt government.

Seems the police are too busy playing chess and dumping their rubbish in the veld to worry about crime..

The funny bit is the rubbish was dumped about 50m from where the Zama Zamas are digging up the area...(Taken on my ride this morning)
SAPS. Criminals be warned....

The Sunday Times reports that police told an impacted developer to find a way to work with the extortionist gangs.

Maybe the Sunday Times should investigate whether local government and national are doing this. See which contracts have been handed out to business run by known underworld figures. Lets see how clean these audits realy are.

Simple, bring your own security and shoot to kill anyone who threatens you with heavy guns. Then when the police show up, shoot to kill them too because why are they there now as clearly the law didn't matter to them before.

You could have just left the extra text out, "in trying to help fight construction mafias". The title didn't need to be that long.

Fighting back harder than these mafia is the only way. They are not the only ones with heavy weapons.
The FIRST person to pitch up at a construction site with an illegal firearm must be shot. Then his buddies too.
Keep it up until they learn that the public won't take their %&%@.
Fight fire with fire. No, the law won't come down on your hard. That's a myth. Most cops are happy when you do their jobs for them, as we have to. And the millions these construction jobs are losing will easily cover your legal expenses.

They don't come with guns though, do they? At least not at first. And they can stop your project by simply threatening the employees. The employees live in unsafe areas and are easy to bribe or threaten. But in essence yes, a zero tolerance approach is needed but the government and police allowed it to get out of hand. You'll need to kill a few of them and only then will the government and police suddenly wake up and look for "solutions".
