New bill signed that could put SA into the space race

Last week, the acting President of South Africa, Kgalema Motlanthe signed a bill that may see South Africa entering the realm of space in the near future. If an Act is introduced as a result of the bill, it may see the formation of a central space agency for the country.

The prospective agency would receive in the region of R1 billion in funding over a period of ten years and would be responsible for planning, research and execution of potential space missions as well as maintaining satellite information for the State.

This move comes in an attempt to bring South Africa’s space exploration status more in line with First World countries. The process is being overseen by the Department of Science and Technology.

Believe it or not, we syill have some researchers from the 70's working here.
That, and some really, really smart youngsters wanting to do extra-solar research.

Must admit it's nice, but can't wonder how it's more important than Health (HIV/Aids) and Crime...
