South Africans charged for insurance policies they never took out

Old Mutual has confirmed that a portion of its customers have been signed up to its policies without their permission.

This follows a reader telling MyBroadband that they had been subscribed to, and had been billed for, two different policies for which they had never signed up.

Following Old Mutual confirming the problem, the reader told MyBroadband that they were compensated for the full amount lost due to this fraud from November 2019 to October 2020, as well as an additional R500.

I am happy to read Old Mutual refunded customers the full amounts and topped them with a little extra dough. Would also like to know how this happened. What isn't clear is whether these policies appeared on people's payslips or on the bank statements. If this was on the employee's payslip, then that company really needs some serious help.

The reason the reader only picked up on this issue many months after it had begun is that they do not get regular payslips from their state employer.

This is really sad. Would have thought by now most companies would email the payslips each month or have an HR system in place for employees to retrieve the payslips.

The payslip thing specifically applies to public service employees. Back in the day, policies deductions were done directly by the government and the deductions would appear on their salary slips. Looks like this is still the case for government workers and, if they don't get salary slips, they wouldn't be aware of what deductions were made.
