South Africans kiss Pick n Pay stores goodbye

Whenever I enter a PnP store (usually when I am travelling and it's the nearest grocery store), it feels like you step 10 years back in time. The whole look and feel is 10 years behind..

The executives drove it into the ground. They had no unique challenges that resulted in failure which all other supermarkets were exempt from..

Not surprised, had a Pick n Pay that I used for years, loads of parking, easy to dash in and out of, decent size. Another one about 3 km down the road in a annoying centre with sh*tty parking and not nearly as much selection and they closed the decent one and the sh*tty one is still going :X3:

My local PnP is still in good condition and I don't mind shopping there at all.

The new Checkers that opened close to me does however provide a better experience so we find ourselves gravitating towards it more often than not.

For fresh fruit and veg Woolworths is still the undisputed champ.

It's always very welcoming and a sign of good quality, when you smell the meat section and not even at the entrance yet. The PnP at La Lucia likes to have customers smell the back of the store:sick:
Hyper by the Sea is not that bad though.

I feel sorry for all the rude and arrogant cashiers who are going to be unemployed, and even Game has stopped hiring

Pnp family store is popular in my neighbourhood. More than the revamped PnP corporate.

Checkers, meat is no longer quality at least at the 3 checkers stores in my immediate area.

Pnp free range eggs, taste better than Checkers free range eggs

Yep and the hyper stores with 50 tills and only 5 open in busy periods while the staff sat laughing and talking.
Hence why I don't see the issue.

The employees work and represent this company.
So if the employees have time to laugh and talk, also state we should buy elsewhere, then they do not require our money.

Meat I dont buy from Checkers but from my local butchery.

I have found that over the last year or so the shell of the eggs (30's tray) at our local Pnp still has some poop on it. Yes I know I can just wash them.

Even the eggs I sometimes buy from a local farmer has been cleaned better.

Yep, I kissed PnP goodbye, and they used to be my go-to store until a few years ago.

Now it's just between,

Checkers
Shoprite
Woolworths
FLM
Spar

where I can get what I need from them without giving PnP any thought. I sometimes just browse out of curiosity to see if there is anything they offer, that's cheaper or better, nope. Their delis are pathetic here in my area as well.

It's funny how things change, Raymond Ackerman must be turning in his grave wondering what the hell happened. He was after all fired from Checkers in his early years, then bought some PnP stores, they became very successful and the best stores around, now PnP is floundering and Checkers are dominating. Aah, the circle of life.

Those are the ones that taste better.

As someone who collected eggs as a laaitie, not bothered, as I dont eat the shells.

P&P Hyper is still the best place to shop in SA. It is this little P&P supermarkets that is the problem. I avoid them like the plague.

As for Checkers, just give them time, people are still high on the hype. Their quality are going down the drain, soon people will realize how bad they actually are.
PnP was the alternative to dirty Checkers in the 80s.
Perhaps history will repeat itself.

PnP is struggling, but they could fund an ad starring the rapper Rick Ross.... must've blown their marketing budget for the year on an ad that is totally misdirected. They're obviously trying to appeal to the young and savvy, but this is not the way.

Arrgh that would put me off eggs. No eggs need to be spotless. Surely they have machines that can properly wash them with a safe chemical properly.
