We never really did, remember in the past it was part of your ID, it was only in the late 90s early 2000s the card came out.
In 1998 to be precise... they started nagging me in 1998 to get a card, and tried to force a date on me i.e. 30 November 1998... I resisted them until they started giving me shyte in bribe-blocks so I had it done in 2003 eventually for the first time, at the optometrist in Westgate Shopping Centre.

And now IDGAF anymore, I still have an ID document that says I have a driver's license, so my card expired 5 years ago.... Schabir Shaik can go suck my arse..

They weren't forcing people, as my dad had his until 2003, I got mine in 2000 mainly as that was when I was 18.

Yeah they didn't force you- the problem was the METRO POLICE PIGS in Gauteng with their roadblocks, that they loved to set up on my route to work

I would love to have been a fly on the wall when the decision was made to move from the ID-book based licenses to the present card system. Who exactly decided that 5 years should be the renewal period? And on what basis was this decided? Also who decided that an eye-test needed to be done on every renewal?

For all that I care, they could force renewal every year, but then we need a working system where the whole process could be completed in less than 10 minutes. From application, eye tests to payment. But, unfortunately, this will not be possible. Scrap the whole system and make it permanent as it was before 1994. The card renewals is a blatant government scam aimed at enriching its cronies. So much more this should be closed in total.

The eye test is actually the big problem in the whole renewal process. If countries like the UK do not require eye tests when you renew your license then why should we? By all means require an eye test when a driver is over the age of, say, 60, or so, but for most people the eye test is a complete waste of time. Scrap the eye test, extend the validity to 10 years, and most of the issues around renewals will be solved.
