South Africans warned not to cancel their medical aid

Who would be this stupid?

The people on WA groups who immediately ask what the cause is and when power will be restored if there is an outage. It's like they expect things to happen in seconds, they do not understand technicians need to travel and then have to do troubleshooting. So a bill being signed means everything is suddenly in place in mere hours.

The hospitals etc are provincially run. So if you're in the Western Cape you may make it somewhat, however elsewhere ie Eastern Cape I wont.

Oh, but you will be crazy to spend R7k, R10k, R20k a month while everyone else gets it all for free. No thank you, just cancel that medical aids, because they will all be gone real soon in any event.

Anyone cancelling their health insurance due to NHI is an idiot.

To be quite frank, I do not think any of the people who already cancelled, which is leading to concern for medical aids, and those in the process of cancelling, cares what you say or think. It is their money and their decisions. The only idiots here are the government introducing the act and signing it into law. This is not a game one is playing when drawing up laws. This is not about making statements. This is real. Actions like this have consequences. Real consequences which normally is devastating for anyone involved.

Discovery needs to do something about their payments - i don't know if other medical aids are doing the same but its getting annoying now.

They were great through COVID and just after it, parent landed up in hospital and they paid it all.

Now all of a sudden, they don't pay this, there's a limit to that ....and...and. I'm on the same plan i've been on for years. Parent was in hospital in January and i'm starting to get tons of statements from different places saying Discovery has declined their claim during the hospital stay - some only getting a decline NOW, 4 months afterwards.

And of course because the amount is now 4 months old while they waited on Discovery who says no, they send you a statement and a final demand letter at the same time lol.

Beginning to wonder how much value my R11k a month to Discovery is...

Cancelling medical aid can have severe consequences, both financially and medically (should something happen). Overall you need to consider a lot of other factors other than the NHI before cancelling your Medical Aid.

We have an article describing it in more detail: 10 Things to Consider Before Cancelling your Medical

Should it be due to financial constraints you might consider changing medical aid to medical insurance.
