South Africa's 1,722% electricity price inflation

I remember when electricity was 34 cents a unit

I always find it strange that they use the Eskom prices for comparison, although most people pay municipal rates. In Ekurhuleni, it's about 2.88 PLUS VAT. I'd love to pay Eskom's current tariff.

I remember as a new employee around 2003, I rented a flat and the electricity bill each month was so insignificant it didn't even enter into conversation. It was less that R100 a month.
This was my experience with petrol. It was never a consideration. Long weekend in Mosselbay? No worries, accommodation was then issue, not petrol. This was late 90s early 2000s

It’s because the Rand wasn’t worth ****.

unpossible! StatsSA says our annual inflation has always been around the 6% in the rainbow nation ...

30 years of ±6% annual increases get you to a ±450% increase fyi, nowhere near 1,722%
What are you on about? You’re just repeating what they said.

I'm failing at multitasking today apparently, in any event:
Eskom electricity has increased by over 1,722% since South Africa became a democracy, significantly outpacing inflation of 451.9% over the same period
both can't be true, one of those figures is a lie, guess which ...

I also did not identify with the tariff

I can't believe someone gets paid to think up this rubbish. Must be a slow news day.
True story. Conveniently forgetting all factors both internal and external that go into the electricity price. If only it would be as easy as just considering inflation …
