South Africa's broadband prices benchmarked

Doesn't take into account the "extra" services you get in other countries with your broadband provider.

Case in point, would be cable in the United States.

For your $90 you get hundreds of HD TV channels, 20+mbs speeds, unlimited voice calls in the US.

Was staying with a friend in Washington DC, and he pays $50 a month for cable TV, 20mbs symmetrical (downspeed and upspeed) and unlimited calls.

We get 3mbs international speed, throttled service and we apparently have to be grateful... all for $80 (up to 10mbs and a standard uncapped data bundle)

Yes, something is wrong here, how can Netherlands be more expensive.. You can get 20mbps + TV (probably equivalent to DSTV) for like 38 euro ... And you don't have to buy data, it's all uncapped.

Not defending anything as I would love this service right here in sunny SA... but remember where the content is coming from and the costs associated to transmit it to the tip of Africa. So we could get this service but at a price. :(

I think overkill69 was stressing that the chart is wrong.. how come it shows that USA pay more for their internet than us ?

Content is indeed a completely different game. Distribution rights, exclusivity deals and the like makes it far more challenging than merely having a pipe into a home.

Nyet comrade
Gotta compare apples to apples here.

You can't compare a $80 dollar a month "Broadband Only" service at an average 3mbs
to a
$90 "Broadband, cable TV, unlimited calls" service at an average of 20mbs

It's like saying: "Cost of Food in different countries" and in 'Merica, the average price is $100 (For a short rib steak, grilled vegetables, wasabi potato mash and a young Bordeaux)
is comparable to the South African average meal of $95 (for stale Niknaks)
