South Africa's only driver's licence card printing machine breaks again

South African motorists could face further delays when renewing their driver's licence card as the country's only printing machine has broken down for the second time in less than a year.

This is according to the Eastern Cape's acting chief director for transport regulations, Xolisa Jakula, who said efforts to return it to service by the end of the week are underway.

We need the courts to scrap the card license system in total. It is not working. It is a cash-cow. Hopefully someone will take the system to courts until they do away with it.

Mbalula also said the machine is so old that it is the only one still operating anywhere in the world. Instead of taking responsibility for the issue, he insinuated that his administration inherited the problem
Yup, you inherited the problem from the Apartheid Government. It is all their fault. If they had just bought a modern computerised license printing machine will a full cloud based backend for going fully digital back in the 70/80's, then we wouldn't be in this mess. But no, they had to go and buy some crappy 70's printer that the ANC has been forced to use ever since.

The license was in our ID book and never expired back then.

My excuse of choice if/when I actually get pulled over gets extra weighting.

"Sorry officer, I've been trying for ages to renew my DL without much luck :("
