Warning when buying electric goods in South Africa

A large portion of South Africa's electrical goods market comprises counterfeit goods that offer a cheaper alternative to the real thing but also create serious risks for those using them.

This is according to CBI-electric engineering executive Dr Andrew Dickson, who told Cape Talk that South Africa is seeing an influx of counterfeit electrical goods from the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Asia.

Counterfeit electrical goods? Where do these goods originate? Eastern Europe - so Belarus? Russia? Ukraine?
Middle East? Dubai? Qatar?
Asia -???

Not CBI? Must be counterfeit.

global problem when the chinese know how to do 2 things REALLLY well,
Copy things without a care in the world, and sell massive volumes of said products really cheaply.

look at all the fake U v's driving around, look at all the Temu/wish/alibaba crap being sold to people,

so when a legit company tries to sell you a Toaster, there are 100 more like it all much nicer from the outside,
but will break and be impossible to fix, that its just cheaper to go buy another than buy a expensive legit product from day one

same issue with Cars, Cellphones, Kitchen appliances, anything really,
at this rate the Chinese will take over the world, and we will all be greeting each other with ni-how-ma soon enough.

“Someone will take an existing product and go to somewhere like China and ask them to create a replica,” says Dickson.

“They will take the product and copy it to the nth degree, making it look like yours and bring it back into the market.”
No Dickson, those are generics. Counterfeit goods bear the original name and logo.

You sound like Takealot.

This whole article sounds like Takealot having a fit over Shein and Temu.

have you seen the cr@p they sell on takealot, luckily its easy enough to return and buy something else,
but this is the Chinese strategy, works every time,

pile em high, sell en cheap, flood the market, and push quality products and manufacturers out of business.
or worse, swallow them up, and make the same products for much cheaper with terrible quality.

Where do you see "Eastern European" or even Middle Eastern factories producing goods for cheap enough to sell in SA on the cheap as counterfeits?

You do know that the cost of labour is higher in Eastern Europe and the Middle East than in SA?

And Asia? Which countries? Do you mean Wish sort of products?

Citation needed.

The thing is that Temu does not sell any 220V products in SA. They sell 110V products in the States but no high voltage products in SA to merit the safety issues. I don't know how a 5V USB docking station is going to shock you.
