I saw there is an EV charging station at Bellville Municipality, complete with solar and inverters. Not sure how off grid it is though.

Wonder how much it will cost to recharge at one of these stations.
EVs will only be the norm if the government decides to take away the added Vat and special EV tax etc that makes it too expensive

South Africa's first off-grid EV charging station to be completed by June

Zero Carbon Charge is set to complete South Africa's first fully off-grid electric vehicle (EV) charging station by June 2024.

That is according to comment from the company's co-founder and director, Andries Malherbe, in an interview with Sunday newspaper Rapport.
BatteryX already has one running for months. It is a public car charging facility, it runs on solar, and it is free. Go check it out at 107 Woodford Grove in Durban.

On the contrary, because EVs jump the fuel taxes EVs should have a 50% "Fuel tax loss" charge added to the purchase price and should pay R1000 a year more to license it...

I didn't see one solar panel in those pics. Instead, they make a round roof that makes it useless to mount panels on.
